Machine Servicing

Post by Zaiforce » Wed May 21, 2025 5:24 pm

Hi there,

Just wondering if I could have some advice if possible.

My mother is using a ResMed Lumis 150 VPAP-ST bi-level machine which was prescribed to her after multiple trips to ICU for type 2 respiratory failure with Co2 build-up.

She received her machine in March 2024 and so far it has been doing well for her, no ICU visits since using it :).

Her pressure settings are 20 IPAP / 10 EPAP if that is relevant info.

We clean her tubing/mask/humidifier tank etc. regularly however I have recently read that ResMed recommends the machines be professionally serviced every 6 months to keep them functioning properly, in which they clean and service parts within the machine that the user cannot maintain themselves.

We were unaware of this and therefore we haven't had this done yet and her machine has now been used every night for 14 months and unfortunately our house has a lot of dust which might not help (I replace the filter about every 2 months for the dust reason).

I have read online that if you don't have the machines serviced their pressures can lower unintendedly over time (despite the machine still displaying the intended pressure on the screen).

Does anybody have any advice on this? Is this machine servicing important and how do you go about organising it, just contact ResMed?

We live in a pretty rural area, it could be difficult for us to organise the machine servicing without her having to go without the machine for a period of time, but I am not sure.

Thank you for any advice :).

Is this supposed 6-month service/maintenance protocol written in print in the ResMed manual that came with the machine for home use?

This is the first I have ever heard of this.
I have been using ResMed machines for over 10 years now and I have never had any of them "serviced"...nor have I ever seen documentation as to the need.

Hi there,

Thank you for the reply, I haven't checked the user manual yet, but the location I seen the recommendation on was the ResMed website on this page:

https://www.resmed.com.au/blog/the-esse ... ap-machine

Your comment is a relief, as I was worried we were missing something very important!

The recommendation I found was on the ResMed website here:
https://www.resmed.com.au/blog/the-esse ... ap-machine

I did some Googling and found mention of it on other sites as well, but I wonder how important it actually is.

The comment on one of the sites about pressures dropping over time (despite displaying as if they are correct on the screen) if the machines aren't serviced was what worried me most.

Thanks for providing the link.
Won't change anything with me though....just another ResMed "recommendation" that I will opt to continue to ignore.
I have been on cpap over 15 years now and this is the first time I have heard of this "recommendation".

Thank you, I figured the vast majority of people probably wouldn't do this, just wanted to check the opinions as this forum is always very helpful with advice :)

I did reach out to ResMed via an enquiry on their website to ask how important it is and how I would even go about it, it will be interesting to see what they say.

Thanks again.

As a general rule, home PAP machines are only serviced when a problem presents, which that link's wording hints at, despite the later "recommendation." There is no oil to change or anything. It is designed to work perfectly for at least 5 years.

It seems Resmed have just invented a new revenue stream. There's really nothing in these machines that need "servicing". I suspect they just blow out any dust. If you are in a dusty area, you might want to increase the frequency of filter changes - I do mine monthly.

The machines come with a five year warranty in Australia so long as you sign up for the SleepVantage program. https://www.sleepvantage.com.au/ This tells me the machines will last much longer than five years, and I've never heard of anybody getting them serviced.

* An alternative to Oscar - try SleepHQ

I have no medical training or qualifications. Take my advice for what it's worth.

Thank you everyone, seems like it's not much to worry about, I kind of guessed that might be the case but just wanted to check the advice of others here.

Thank you as always :)

I had not heard of the SleepVantage program, I wonder if it is too late for us to sign up for that, thank you I will look into it :).
