Vaseline advised
Vaseline advised
The agent here in Singapore suggested that I use a little Vaseline on my nose to make the pillows less irritating.
I'm pretty sure that Vaseline / petroleum jelly is not good for the nasal pillows, but as I'm not sure, can anyone in the know let give me the 'heads up' on this?
Thanks
D

Re: Vaseline advised
Definitely NOT advised for a number of reasons......including inhaling the vapors into the lungs.
Here's a link I just did for a forum search on "Vaseline".

Re: Vaseline advised
Some dealers will advise using Vaseline, either out of ignorance or (horrors) greedy self interest.
Vaseline reacts with silicone, and may shorten the life of silicone parts.
I like Lansinoh ointment (sold for nursing mothers), as it is compatible with silicone.

Re: Vaseline advised
I looked at some of those old posts and the condition it could cause (by inhaling it) is called "lipid pneumonia".

Wow I didn't know inhaling it could potentially so bad. Well that just goes to show the level of expertise the medical people have here when it comes to sleep therapy.
It's all about the money here, not about the patient.

Re: Vaseline advised
If you want a vaseline like substance you could use KY Jelly - it won't react with the silicone. I have no idea regarding possible dangers related to inhaling it though - it probably isn't as bad as vaseline (which is a petroleum product). But as mentioned above, most people seem to use Lasinoh.

Re: Vaseline advised
Purified lanolin would be best, as raw lanolin smells like sheep.

Re: Vaseline advised
Is there any proof that lanolin is less damaging to silicone than Vaseline? Is there any proof that lanolin is safer to use in your nose than Vaseline? Has anyone had a mask damaged by Vaseline? Does anyone know of anyone that has been diagnosed with lipid pneumonia that was caused by chronic use of Vaseline around the nose?
I don't recommend Vaseline for anything, but I am not convinced that lanolin is really any safer.
KY is a lousy skin protectant.

Re: Vaseline advised
Since lanolin is an animal product, some people will not want to use it, due to principles.
I respect that, but I have seen how much better a newly sheared sheep seems to feel,
by how it frolics when released.

I have never had a problem using petroleum products on my cpap masks. I think that is another urban legend that lingers on the internet.Merlin7 wrote:The agent here in Singapore suggested that I use a little Vaseline on my nose to make the pillows less irritating.

Re: Vaseline advised
Starting back in the 60's we used spark plug wire that was made with silicone rubber for racing. The advantages of this wire was its ability to withstand oil, grease, and hot headers. Based on my prior experiences, I find it hard to believe that petroleum jelly would damage the silicone seal. A few other lubricates you may wish to consider would be a lip balm, such as Chap-Stick, or Blistex(if your nose is raw this may burn), or Coconut Oil. The only drawback to the coconut oil is it will make your nasal pillows smell so good that you might want to eat them.
