Drying out the hose on my new AutoPAP.

Post by Evolution13 » Tue Feb 10, 2015 2:04 am

I recently got upgraded from an ancient CPAP machine to a brand new shiny Resmed Airsense 10 AutoPAP. I asked for a 10 foot hose as I had a few incidents where I managed to yank my cpap off the table during the night with a 6 foot hose. They had to special order it so I'm still using my old hose instead of the one that can auto-sense the humidity in the system.

Since I have to manually set the humidity, I get a lot of water build up in the hose on occasion. On the old machine I'd just turn off the humidifier and let it run dry air through the hose until all the moisture was purged and/or dried out. The new machine won't continue to blow air for more than a couple minutes if it doesn't sense a good seal in the system. The best I can do is set it to mask fit mode and it'll run for maybe two minutes before shutting off. Hopefully when I get the hose that it's supposed to use this won't be a problem anymore, but until then the gurgling noises can get annoying.

I'm wondering if it's possible to force it to run continuously? I love the new autopap but it's too smart for it's own good in this one instance. I also worry that making it run continuously will cause weird data to be recorded on the SD card.

You should be able to do what you want by turning the Smart Start feature to off and just manually starting and stopping the machine.

The hours blowing without you attached will still show up on the machine run hours but they won't be included in the therapy hours since the machine will know that a human is not attached.

Standard remedies for preventing condensation in the hose -

1. Use a hose cover to provide insulation and reduce or eliminate condensation inside the hose.

2. Place your machine below the level of the mattress and run the hose so that any condensation will run back into the humidifier tank during the night.

3. Try turning your humidity level down a notch or two and see if your nasal passages are still sufficiently moisturized.

I don't believe that there exists a 10 foot heated climateline hose, and even so, it doesn't sense humidity, it senses temperature at the end of the hose.

as far as I know, the blower in the airsense 10 keeps running for a while on low, like the s9 blowers did, to help dry the hose.

like granny says.

You don't really need to dry the hose out. Just shake the water out of it. One trick is to tie the middle of the hose to the headboard or something such that it runs downhill from there such that water will run downhill back to the tank or down to the mask. That also helps keep you from pulling the machine off the table.

Once you turn the machine back on, it will get damp again.

You can buy longer unheated hoses online, like at our host, cpap.com, or eBay. They may be cheaper than your DME, even with insurance.

If you're worried about germs and dampness, get a second hose, and swap them occasionally so that one hose can dry thoroughly after cleaning. If your old machine still works, you can use it to dry the hose out.

BTW, figure out some way to absolutely not pull the machine off the table. You can spill the water back into the blower unit and ruin it if you turn the machine over. Either tie the hose to something so you can't pull the machine over, or put the machine in a drawer or something.

Grab the hose in the center. Swing the hose around over your head quickly. Centrifugal force will flush the tube of almost all the water in a mater of seconds.

Make sure to turn the ceiling fan off in advance.

And use heirloom tomatoes.

maybe that's one of the reasons some people have to replace their hoses so often.

better to just leave the poor hose alone... it'll last for years.

If you hang it to dry, just don't hang it in or near the bathroom.
When someone flushes there is a lovely mist containing fecal coliform.

I'm with "Arch" on those points.

And on the last point he makes, make sure you set the machine on some old thick mouse pads or the rubberized "waffle" style rolls of drawer liner or from the rolls of stuff you can get to put under rugs to keep them from moving around.
Makes it much harder to pull the machine off the table.

While I also don't worry about drying my hose in general....OP has enough water in it for it to be making noise and that's a different issue. It's amazing how much noise a few drops of water will make in the hose.
I have had it happen myself...and in the middle of the night the only solution is to unhook the hose and drain it onto towel or something...holding it upright so it runs back into the humidifier didn't get rid of enough water to not make the annoying noise.

I personally wouldn't be using the machine to try to dry out the hose if the gurgling noise was present...I would remove the hose and drain it myself. If someone has a couple of tablespoons of water in the hose and causing gurgling...I am not sure that even running the machine all day would dry it out enough to stop the noise anyway.

In order to keep myself from pulling the machine off in the middle of the night I bought some Velcro strips and attached some to the bottom of the machine and some to the top of my nightstand. If you are worried about messing up the top of the nightstand, get a heavy cutting board te set on top of the stand and attach the Velcro to that and clamp the cutting board to the top of the stand.

When you pull the machine off in the middle of the night with water in it even if you get the machine working again by drying it out you can eventually get mold growing in the machine.

Instructions unclear. Got my hose caught in the sealing fan.

And the deer lady is right pointing out what's obvious to us old hands. "Wet" hose doesn't matter that much in terms of growing germs, etc. Hose with enough water to gurgle does matter, and you need to empty that.
