Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
Hi,
As the question states, how/where can I sell a new CPAP device? I have an ResMed S9 Auto w/ H5i humidifier. Nothing has been used, and it includes everything but the mask. I tried selling it on craigslist but got a PM stating that it is illegal to sell a CPAP and was wondering if there's any truth to that. Please let me know.
Thanks

Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
given that there's hundreds of them on craigslist, it doesn't seem that anybody is paying attention.scienceman123 wrote:Hi,

Was it prescribed for YOU to use?
If so, why are you NOT using it?
Did your insurance purchase it?
Is your insurance STILL paying for it?

Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
I see them for sale on Craigslist all the time, I don't know if it is legal or not but I am sure someone who doesn't know what a CPAP Machine is for is not really going to spend a lot of money to buy one unless they need one that is prescribed by a Doctor. I read also on one of the boards that there is an Auction site just for Cpap users unfortunately I don't know what the URL is for that site.
Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
You might try secondwindcpap.com they buy machines.

In short, it was prescribed to my mom about 2-3 years back, I think she had problems with one of her previous machines and decided not to use this new one (I assume assume this device was prescribed to her). I found it in my basement just sitting there, still functional of course. As far as I know, our insurance purchased it.
On craigslist it states prescription medical devices are forbidden, but I always assumed CPAP was just a general device that has specific settings one is prescribed to use.
I tried Secondwindcpap and they were offering like $125 for it...and it's a brand new device...should go for nothing south of $600 IMO.

good luck with that.Guest wrote:should go for nothing south of $600 IMO.
of course, it depends on *which* of the 13 or so resmed s9 models it is....
brand new, with a warranty, sure, 600$, used, no warranty? nope, no way.

Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
Secondwindcpap cleans and checks and markets it. They're not going to give you what they expect to get for it.
The truth is that it's worth what the market says it's worth. Compared to leaving it in your basement it seems like their offer's something to consider.

Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
Yes, but if the settings are not prescribed, and a machine just handed to a patient with no proper instruction related to his/her diagnosis, unfortunate things could happen... it's a medical device as you said, it affects your physical self and therefore needs a prescription.... except, of course, when patients who already know their numbers buy it 2nd hand (new or not) on the open market.
Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
I've not only seen many but purchased a few machines from Craigslist when I've been trying to help friends out who were not able to get them through insurance. You'll have to figure out what your model has been selling for on the used market. It being new is an advantage, but unfortunately, like a used car, it's value will not be as new. And the prices you see quoted in some places are insurance billing prices, not what actually gets paid. Since getting more for it is important to you, selling it to someone who is reselling is not going to be your best best. Good luck with finding a buyer and getting a deal that's satisfactory to both parties.

Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
Scienceman, your S9 Autoset with humidifier is worth about $300 as a sale on Craigslist or the forum. More than that and it won't sell. It's a very good machine, and has recently been subsumed by the new Resmed Airsense 10 autoset. There has been one of those for sale on the forum at $695 for the last three months. There are many machines for sale with fantasy prices. If you're serious about converting this to cash, I think you'll find $250 to $300 will get the job done.

You couldn't have gotten a PM since you are not a member of this board. Whoever told you that was misinformed...it is E-Bay that doesn't allow CPAPs

No, I got a PM or an email from someone on craigslist stating it is illegal to sell the CPAP machine I had listed.LSAT wrote: You couldn't have gotten a PM since you are not a member of this board. Whoever told you that was misinformed...it is E-Bay that doesn't allow CPAPs
As far as price goes, I would be willing to negotiate, but whenever I type ResMed S9 AutoSet into google I see prices $800+, there's even a refurbished one selling for $700. At least, given what I have to offer is unused, $125 seems way too low.
I'm also a bit confused now because if selling medical devices is illegal, why are sites like secondwindpipe and 1800cpap allowed to?
Re: Where can I sell an unused CPAP machine?
Unless you are a dealer, selling the machines still in sealed bags and they're very recently purchased, even if they just sit in your house for months, they're considered 2nd hand like anything else... not rational, but it's the way the world works.
And the companies get into trouble selling with no scripts, but again, on SW and CL they're considered 2nd hand and so no script is usually asked for... if you happened to hit one person who said different, I wouldn't worry about them unless they were the actual site owners.

I bought my backup S9 autoset for $200 on Craigslist. There are models listed for $400 that have being relisted over and over for several months now. Just because you see something listed for a price, doesn't mean that it will sell at that price. Mos people are selling their machines at inflated prices because they got them at inflated prices from retail stores that show a higher price than insurance will pay. That isn't going to be the going price for a machine that comes without warranty and is no longer made.
Also, there are brand new Airsense 10 machines on craigslist for $600 now. Why would anybody pay $600 for an older machine when the newer one is $600?
