Years ago I tried melatonin. It helped me fall asleep faster but didn't seem to help me sleep better--at the time I didn't know I had sleep apnea. After using it a few months I started getting a nervous feeling shortly after taking it each night (even though I used way below the recommended dosage). Haven't used it since.
Never tried gaba.

Just can't resist giving my $.02 here. I have used melatonin very successfully in the past and loved it. I started my husband using it as well and he suffered from erectile dysfunction for 2 weeks after we realized that was the problem and quit using it. I know that many men have used it before with no problem but it is not for everyone.

Melatonin works for me if I take it about an hour or so before bedtime.
Never noticed the dysfunctional problem.
By "Gaba" do you mean Gabapentin? That is for Restless Leg Syndrome. I have a prescription for it but rarely use it and only in tiny doses when absolutely necessary. I feel too groggy the next day after using it, which seems to defeat the point of taking it.

I've been using melatonin for more than 15 years every night, it helps me sleep all the way through the night even with cpap.
It hasn't caused me any erectile dysfunction, nor are there any listed side effects such as ED ever found in all the hundreds of studies ever done on melatonin other than the side effect of falling asleep and offering a deeper sleep.

I have tried both - for me they both leave a hangover effect - just my experience. Just be careful if you take either of these with any sedative meds.
For anyone not knowing GABA is actually an amino acid you can buy at a health food store.
Gabapentin (neurontin) is an Rx med that was first FDA approved as an antiseizure med and it now used for many conditions including restless legs, neuropathy, and mood stabilization. It is an isomer of GABA and at first it was thought it would act on the same brain receptors as the benzo's.
