How many CPAP users exist, and how much profit do DMEs make?
How many CPAP users exist, and how much profit do DMEs make?
There are a few CPAP and sleep apnea statistics that don't seem very easy to find. Does anyone have any educated guesses at the following?
How many current CPAP machines users are there in the United States, or the world?
How many new CPAP users are there each year, including the people who don't end up using them enough and they get taken back?
Approximately how much profit does the average DME make from a patient who continues to use his/her CPAP machine for a year? I think the total costs for replacement parts and accessories are $300-800 a year.

If they are a publicly traded company you can dumpster dive their financial statements other wise you have no right to that information.
In use cpap machines would be hard to calculate unless you have access to medical data - which is also private and kept in many different locations and databases. To get permission to data mine the big data bases of a provincial medicare system requires many hoops to be jumped through - my niece currently has a job doing this.

It is hard to say. If a company is publicly traded, you can check the stock market.
Conversely, you can check for the police records mentioning the business.
If I walk in and there are wall to wall scooters and lift chairs, they are diversifying, or stuck with too much merch.

I Agree...How much $$ does your dry cleaner make over the year? My DME doesn't make much on me...I rarely order anything. My mask is over a year old...I change my cushion once a year and my hose is over a year old. I think your $300-$800 figure is all wet. My purchases are about $50.Wulfman... wrote:"What difference, at this point, does it make?!" HRCslprrrr wrote:There are a few CPAP and sleep apnea statistics that don't seem very easy to find. I think essentially this is a good post. I want the manufacturer making the lion's share of the money. We all need advanced technology and having someone in the middle with a doctor, insurance company, tech, lab, and other furry little animals is not helping us!

According to the BCC Research, the global homecare respiratory market in 2009 was approximately US$2.86 billion, which will be increased to US$4.4 billion in 2015, representing 7.5% compound annual growth, of which, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) remains the largest item of homecare respiratory therapy products. Philips Respironics, ResMed, and Fisher & Paykel are the main CPAP manufacturers in the world, of which, Philips Respironics and ResMed take over 80% market share together. Mergers and acquisitions among firms help leading manufacturers monopolize the market. For example, Philips Respironics takes up over 50% CPAP market in the United States. Philips acquired Respironics in 2007. Respironics specialized in the R&D, production, distribution, and marketing of medical and homecare respiratory therapy products; therefore, the said acquisition helped Philips build up a more complete medical and homecare ventilator product line in the United States; also, helped Philips become the market leader in the global homecare, home respiratory care, and fast-growing sleep apnea care business.

15-30 million people in USA probably have OSA.
20-30% of them have the diagnosis
20-30% of THEM use CPAP with some success - so roughly half million to 3 million people in usa.

I am guessing that you are inept in business matters and are really wanting to know how much the markup is. The markup and profit are very different numbers.slprrrr wrote: Approximately how much profit does the average DME make from a patient who continues to use his/her CPAP machine for a year?
Way off base. I am self-insured and haven't spent $300 in the last five years.slprrrr wrote: I think the total costs for replacement parts and accessories are $300-800 a year.

Re: How many CPAP users exist, and how much profit do DMEs make?
Yeah, even $300 is way too high. My current schedule is as follows:
1/yr. Airfit P10 Mask @ $42.21 = $42.21
2/yr. Airfit P10 Headgear @ $13.74 = $27.48
6/yr. Air filters @ 11.95 = $11.22
Total = $80.91
Note that these are insurance contracted rates, but that I pay for everything out-of-pocket because I have a $100 copay for DME. I don't know how for sure how much of that is profit for the DME, but I'd guess they don't make more than $25 of those purchases.

Re: How many CPAP users exist, and how much profit do DMEs make?
For one shipment of the supplies listed below, SleepMed billed my insurance for $339.98. My insurance paid $115.00 of it,(CareFirst/ BCBS) I was billed for $46.00 and the rest was listed as a "write off" adjustment by SleepMed. So, yeah, $300-$800 per year are very realistic numbers in some scenarios. I can't wait to see how much they want to skewer my insurance for the new S9 Autoset that I am getting in a few days ! It's a racket I tell ya !!
Swift FX -$135
Swift FX headgear -$49.00
6' tube (hose) -$69.00 !!!!!!!
1- fine disp. filter -$9.99
1-non-disp. pollen filter -$29.99
PR water chamber -$47.00
Swift FX -$135

Why are you buying a humidifier chamber? I used the same one for six years with my last PR machine and the chamber is still good and ready to be used in my backup machine.Gasper62 wrote:PR water chamber
So that is $161 paid. What are you buying the rest of the year that gets the costs in the $300 - $800 range?Gasper62 wrote:My insurance paid $115.00 of it,(CareFirst/ BCBS) I was billed for $46.00
Hoses and headgear last for years. At least for me, the cushion will last for a year or more.
Re: How many CPAP users exist, and how much profit do DMEs make?
Some people take advantage of their insurance and stockpile supplies in their closet. Often you see them being sold. This causes everyones insurance premiums to go up and benefits go down.
