Ultra Mirage II Nasal Mask question

Post by JulieC » Fri Jun 30, 2006 5:37 pm

From your local anxious newbie...

I just used my CPAP for the first time last night. I think I know the answer to this, but need to check it out to be sure. The mask directions say to "push the air tubing all the way on to the swivel...tubing and the ridge of the swivel must completely met." However, I wasn't able to do this. I assume it's just because I have a different brand machine/hose (the Fisher&Paykel HC604, set a 7cm). Any reason to be concerned if I can't push it in all the way?

Also, there was a steady stream of air coming out, I believe right under the vent cover. I expected air to come out with my exhales, but it's a constant and strong stream. I assume that's as it should be, but just need the reassurance.

I tried CPAP many years ago when my apnea was very mild, and was non-compliant. With my latest sleep study I know I now MUST acclimate to this thing.

thanks in advance for the support and advice!

Julie

you only have to push it on so it doesn't come off, hold the plastic elbow so you don't break it. When the hose is new it can be more difficult to connect.

The leaking air is the EXHAUST port and there for a purpose, this is where the exhaled air escapes when you exhale out.

It is IMPORTANT not to block that leak, the machine will compensate for that expected leak.

Only leak you need to be concerned about is any leaks between your face and the cushion, also any leaks into your eyes. You do NOT want any leaks into your eyes.

It is best to lay down on your back with head in pillow hose connected, machine running then adjust your mask headgear so it just stops any leaks, no tighter.
