Smallest, lightest machine for Complex Apnea
Smallest, lightest machine for Complex Apnea
I am currently using a 5 yr. old Respironics Bi-Pap Auto SV Advanced machine with humidifier. It's noisy, large and heavy. I travel a lot so I need a machine that is as small and light as possible. I have tried looking online for the current models of a Resmed or Respironics machine to treat Complex Apnea to get the dimensions and weight, but I can never seem to get the total dimensions and weight with the humidifier, nor am I even sure I'm looking at the right machine online. Is anyone using a current model from either of these companies and can give me the total dimensions w/humidifier and approximate weight? Thanks for any advice.

Our host's site (https://www.cpap.com) gives the info you're looking for on every machine they sell. Under the basic description of the item are tabs you can click on for more information. One of them is Specs. You'll find dimension and weight info there.JIMCHI wrote:I am currently using a 5 yr. old Respironics Bi-Pap Auto SV Advanced machine with humidifier. The newer models from ResMed and Respironics are both pretty reasonable, size-wise (much smaller and lighter than my old BiPAP ASV - the "legacy" or "tank" model). I don't know of any machine of this type that's made specifically for travel.

I don't have anything to weigh with but here are dimensions in inches (approx since I was using a tape measure and might be off a fraction).
Blower and humidifier attached.
You can get the approx weight by adding the blower weight to humidifier weight which is found under the product description specs at cpap.com.
Water chamber volume is also listed under the specs.
ResMed S9 Adapt
11 1/4 length from left side of blower to right side of attached humidifier
6 deep (front to back) not counting where the long hose attaches on the back side.
3 inches in height
PR S1 ASV model 960
10 1/2 length measured same as length on the Adapt
6 1/2 deep ...front to back
3 1/4 in height...not counting the swivel where the long hose attaches to the top of the humidifier
I don't have the latest ResMed AirCurve 10 model to measure
Overall the ResMed S9 is slightly more compact but just barely when compared to the PR S1.
I think the new AirSense/AirCurve machines are going to be slightly more compact than the S9 from what I have seen and heard.
All will be more compact than your Legacy series machine.

Re: Smallest, lightest machine for Complex Apnea
Thanks for the good advice.
I prefer Resmed because you can talk directly with them with any questions or problems. DME's are not always very helpful. I like the Resmed AirCurve 10 ASV as it seems to meet my needs. The last time I had a Resmed machine with a humidifier some little drops of water must have trickled into the machine from the humidifier and damaged it. It cost me $450 to have it repaired. In looking at the new Respironics models they seem to have a "backflow preventer" that will keep any water from getting back into the machine. Does anyone know if the Resmed machine has a similar feature?

Re: Smallest, lightest machine for Complex Apnea
Well, maybe I can't get a new machine after all. Medicare says my existing machine has to be declared non-repairable. There's really nothing wrong with it other than it's noisy (my wife has to wear earplugs) and bulky and heavy to carry when we travel, but it's always been this way.

Re: Smallest, lightest machine for Complex Apnea
Maybe you can put it into some sort of acoustical vented enclosure to help with the noise.
Maybe line a box with some of the waffle open cell foam and provide a longish air entry passage to muffle the sound.
Doesn't help with the travel problems though.
Have you looked at SecondWind or other posters here at CPAPTALK to see if a gently used current machine might be low enough in cost to be affordable? ASV machines occasionally show up and the prices are certainly better than a local DME.

in another thread, grayghost just mentioned he has a couple gently used ASV machines.JDS74 wrote:Maybe you can put it into some sort of acoustical vented enclosure to help with the noise.
