CPAP Fixed Pressure from CPAP Auto Pressure

Post by fdw » Thu Oct 15, 2015 7:33 am

Maybe this heading sounds a little odd to some.

In august 2014 I bought the S9 Auto machine and set it up as a CPAP machine with a Max and Min pressure set the same (example: 14.0 Max and 14.0 Min). A little over a week ago I changed it to a Fixed pressure of 14.0, NO Max or Min pressure.

No sure if there is a placebo effect going on, but I'm starting to feel better (after over a year) . I suspect possibly that the Auto mode was causing me to wake just enough to not get to REM, because of the little PUFFS of air the machine blows to see if the airway is open in the Auto mode. BTW, ERP 3.0

Im still only getting 5.5, 6.5 hours of sleep a night and thats taking generic Ambien, I will occasionally get 7.5, 8.5 hours of sleep a few times a month.

Any experts want to advise or explain what's happening?

Thanks

That FOT thing to check for open or closed airway still functions in CPAP mode.
If it didn't cpap mode wouldn't identify/flag centrals but it does.
ResMed's do the FOT thing for central identification and Respironics does the tiny puffs of air thing to help with identification.

FOT Forced Oscillation Technique
CSA detection

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) detection is now available in both the S9 AutoSet and S9 Elite. It uses the Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) to determine whether the airway is open or closed during an apnea. Small oscillations in pressure are added to the current device pressure. The CSA algorithm uses the resulting flow and pressures to measure whether the airway is open or closed.

Don't throw that placebo effect out the window. The brain is a powerful drug and if it helps...who cares why it helps.

To quote "somebody".......

"What difference, at this point, does it make?" HRC

Hey, if it works and you're feeling better, don't knock it. Sometimes it's a matter of "timing", too.

For me, back in 2005......I started in mid-May and for whatever reason, sometime in about mid- August things started clicking, my numbers took a dramatic drop (even lower than they were) and it was apparent that my therapy was indeed working.

Enjoy the placebo effect.........or whatever it is.
