s8 Autoset Spirit II upgrading to a newer machine

Post by db2000 » Fri Oct 23, 2015 10:01 pm

Hello,
I am currently renting an old s8 Autoset Spirit II from my local clinic.

Whilst it is a VAST improvement from not using a machine I just wonder what upgrading will offer. Unfortunately I don't have any analytics from the machine

I have been looking at the DeVilbiss Intellipap Auto CPAP Machine with SMARTFLEX or S9 Autoset or S10 Autoset.

Because the machines are newer am I going to get better technology?

Are the machines going to function miles better than the s8? or is it more about reporting?

Is there a big difference between a more expensive model like an s10 vs a Intellipap

I suggest you go to https://www.cpap.com and look at the various machines and their specs.
About anything (from the major manufacturers) you pick out these days is going to better than the S8.
The newest from ResMed is the "Airsense 10" and Philips/Respironics just introduced the "Dreamstation" series.

Do you have insurance? Why are you renting?

Thanks very much.

I am renting because I live in Australia and the health insurance I have doesn't cover CPAP.

Does "better than the s8" mean better in the way of functioning for a better night sleep? or is more just the reporting features and noise?

Could be for any of those reasons. The data cards and card readers for the S8 machines have been virtually non-existent for a number of years. The new machine generations mainly use common SD cards to hold the data. Most machines are quieter than their predecessors......however, it's still a "luck of the draw" situation in that some people get one they think is louder than it should be or have a problem.......but, with electronics equipment, that can happen with almost anything and usually happens under warranty.
The "Autoset" (or Auto) models have improvements in their sensors and algorithms for (presumably) better therapy and reporting.

And, along with the rest, one or more of the forum "gurus" have developed some software called "Sleepyhead" that is free and works across numerous brands and models of machines and a number of computer operating systems.

The newer machines are more quiet, so that usually helps sleep quality. Also, with all the data available, you have a lot of options to adjust your therapy settings to make it ideal for YOU. And that means better sleep quality. Algorythms are better too, so they can predict and respond better.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

The ResMed machines (S9 AutoSet and the AirSense 10 AutoSet) have had significant changes to the algorithm that does the sensing and deciding how to treat the apnea events when compared to the S8 algorithm.
Response is quicker and not as limited as the algorithm of the S8 models.
Not to mention the additional data that is now collected to help with therapy evaluation.
It's more than just "fluff"...the newer models are a considerable improvement in pretty much all areas...from noise to the heated hoses (major improvement in dealing with condensation) as well as treating the apnea.

Now I just have to do some research and select a model

I don't know what you have been paying to "rent" or I think sometimes it is called "hire" down in your neighborhood but your might compare prices locally to secondwindcpap.com.
They can and do ship to Australia.

Since the AirSense line is newer the prices for the S9 machines seemed to have come down a little so if money is a issue the S9 is still a great choice.

The three auto machines that you mention the option of both auto and CPAP , as well as give you information to improve your therapy. The only disadvantage of the Intellipap is that it does not record RERAs but if that wasn't a problem from your sleep study you don't need to worry about it.

That said, if you are very happy with what you have, check out Craigslist. A lot of barely used S8 machines are showing up often under $100.
