ideas for nasal plugs/bungs

Post by rotoplooker » Sun Jul 09, 2006 7:01 am

Hi everyone,

Being a mostly mouth breathing CPAP user who has been struggling for the last 10 months with every type of mask going, I have tried many masks, and found that I sleep better using the much disliked (by the masses) F & P Oracle 452 oral mask. I find it very comfortable and tolerable.

My only real hassle is that occasionally I get a leak through my nose and the nasal plugs that come with the Oracle 452 are about as useful as a chocolate tea-pot. Obviously this wakes me up often.

I have tried a swimming nose clip which certainly works but it pinches and is too uncomfortable after a while. So....

Any engineer minded folks that might suggest any cool ideas for pluggin' up my nostrils well and safely?

Does anyone know of swimming nose clips that don't grip too tight?
Please feel free give me random ideas, this place looks so good for ideas!

Wishing you all that revived and rested feeling in the morning

This is pure brain storming. I have not tried it. Put some sort of plugs in the nares (F&P plugs should work). Then use a bandaid or a breathright strip to hold them in place (attaching to each side of the nose. Seems simple and should work at low cost.

Well, it is the best I can do.. Best wishes.

Nose plugs

Post by kteague » Sun Jul 09, 2006 8:41 pm

Okay, definitely not an engineering epiphany, but is it that the plugs you have leak due to fit or from shifting downward? If the issue is fitting enough to seal, a couple random thoughts.....

1. Whatever is used besides items designed for nose plugs, make sure they cannot be accidentally inhaled during sleep. (Wouldn't make for an impressive epitaph.)

2. If no latex allergies, use rubber finger protectors found with bandaids and bandages and such. Or cut the fingers off rubber gloves. Fill the fingers then stuff them in your nose. Secure as per Masked Mechanic's suggestion.

At work we have earplugs made of yellow expandable foam.
You roll them up stick them in then hold them in place while they expand.
Some of them come with a cord attaching them so you can pull them out easier might also be safer with the cord.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

Yes just to clarify, the plugs supplied with the oracle 452 come in small, medium and large sizes and they are all ill-fitting for me, it's not that they move about, they just fail to plug the space up.

thanks all for your ideas guys, much appreciated.

I have just started using the Oracle 452 and had the same problem with Nasal leaks. This is how I solved my problem.

I went to my local Walgreens and bought some Mack's Pillow soft EARplugs. These arent like the normal spongy earplugs but more of a plasticine texture. Then I flattened two (ladies, imagine you're rolling out pastry!) and put them over the nasal plugs that came with the Oracle. Then I unsexily stuffed them in my nose and hey presto! no more leaks.

Now I sleep all night long....just that with these things hanging out of my nose, no-one will sleep next to me! Good luck all.

It might be more trouble than it's worth, but how about adding a port for a nasal pillow line to a tubing coupler so you can use your oral mask as a hybrid?
