Musty smell from humidifier

Post by K8TEK » Sun Apr 24, 2016 10:34 am

I have a Resmed Airsense 10 Auto.

Had 76 hours on it when I bought it.

Now it has close to 500 hours and the humidifier has a musty smell.

How do you get rid of the musty smell. I tried cleaning it with soap and water, does white vinegar help?

Change the filter.
Aromatherapy, any scent but patchouli.

In the search window, type in "smoke smell."

Vinegar should certainly get rid of any musty smell coming from the water reservoir. I use a mild solution of sodium hypochlorite on mine about once a week with copious rinsing afterwards. As mentioned, your filter may need attention or, see if any water/rain-out has started something in your tubing.Musty is no good. Good luck.

How do you know it's the humidifier?
Have you changed the filters?
Have you changed or cleaned the hose?
Are you using distilled water?

Any or all of this should be very simple to clean/fix/remove the musty smell.

Anybody ever use Tergazyme to clean their cpap equipment?

What chemicals are in it? You don't want to destroy your machine.

Link to the MSDS:
http://www.alconox.com/downloads/pdf/ms ... h_ansi.pdf
Two things stand out to me: eye irritation, and "self-contained breathing equipment".
I would NOT want it near my cpap.

If you live by the ocean or a large body of water(or not using distilled water) you will get this musty smell from time to time, I travel to Mexico usually in the winter and when I return I have to go through a good cleaning of system from filters to hoses and reservoir. Where ever there is a lot of humidity in the air that can be a problem.
When winter comes around and a lake freezes up so does the humidity so mold or musty smells disappear that is what my conclusion is and I just accept nature.(not sure how to prove this idea.) My cleaning usally 1 part vinegar -3 parts water liquid soup and a splash of mouth wash.

Tergazyme is what Resmed recommends hospitals use to clean stuff between patients.

Since you are the only one using your equipment, (you are, right?)
Tergazyme would be overkill. Mild dish soap or vinegar and water is appropriate to use at home.
Vinegar is effective against mold.
Do not allow liquids of any kind to enter the blower unit--it is very bad for it.

A also had a musty odor, and it seems to be coming from the water in the reservoir. This is almost certainly from some type of mold or bacteria. I think the problem is that bacteria start growing, producing musty compounds (this is common in water supply reservoirs), and the odors concentrate as the water volume is evaporated, along with the bacteria or molds producing the odors, and this continues over time. I think the solution is to empty and clean the reservoir, then completely dry it, frequently - every few days. A vinegar soak after cleaning might help even more, but of course it should be rinsed out and the unit dried before replacing in the machine.

I think the same types of molds and bacteria could grow in the tubing also, but not quite as fast. The reservoir seems to be the source of my problem (I can smell it). It is not in the original distilled water bottle.

Sure drinking water does contain bacteria.

Leaving the water chamber open and exposed to room air will allow things floating in the room air to collect.
Hopefully you aren't leaving things open and exposed in your bathroom.

If you are using distilled you shouldn't have this problem.

Most people here just use distilled and leave the chamber and hose closed to room air to avoid contamination.

My mask got funky smelling due to rainout. Normal cleaning didn't help. I used Hydrogen Peroxide and that worked for me.
Seeing and believing are often both wrong. FOW

Sometimes simple, cheap solutions work. That is why they are awesome.
