Trouble replacing Respironics Comfort Classic Mask

Post by JKNYC » Wed May 18, 2016 4:05 pm

I've been having trouble trying to replace my Respironics Comfort Classic Nasal Mask (that has been discontinued.) With several of the replacements that I tried I have problems with re-breathing exhalation.

I've been using a CPAP for 10 years at a pressure of 4cm. I have three CPAP machines: Respironics M Series C Flex, an Apex XT, and a DeVilbiss Intellipap AutoAdjust. I've tried several masks including: ResMed Ultra Mirage™ II Nasal CPAP Mask, Philips Respironics DreamWear Nasal Mask, and Respironics ComfortGel Blue Nasal CPAP Mask.

With my old Comfort Classic Nasal Mask there was an optional capped opening that one could open for greater exhalation and that helped me avoid re-breathing. I can’t find a replacement.

Does anyone have a mask they’d recommend that works well with low pressure levels?

Where are you looking? What makes you think they've been discontinued?

Maybe that "capped opening" was actually for an oxygen connector and should not have been removed if you weren't using oxygen.

Mask Port Cap. The ComfortClassic has an oxygen port for those needing to bleed in supplemental oxygen. If that is not needed, the port cap should remain on.

If you've been using it with the cap off and weren't using oxygen, your therapy has been seriously compromised.

Actually your link to cpap com shows it has been discontinued. I usually buy from them. I notice that thecpapstore com also lists it as discontinued. But some of those websites might still have stock. I have one unopened mask. But I assume I'll have to make the switch at some point.

You are right about the purpose of that port, Den, but for 10 years I've been getting great sleep, waking refreshed, and my wife notes I don't snore. I'm not getting good sleep with any of the new masks.

Sorry 'bout that.
But, check the DirectHome Medical link. I don't SEE that it says it's discontinued.

You might also check with some of those suppliers to see if they still have replacement parts for the masks.

The replacement mask is the Comfort Gel Nasal MASK, It seals better, but has NO O2 PORT. As you were told the O2 port should be capped, unless you are bleeding O2 into it. 4 cm is a air starvation level, 99% of users couldn't stand it.

I'd go with the Comfort Gel Nasal Mask and up my pressure to 6 cm so I wouldn't die in my sleep. Jim

Thanks for the encouragement. I had previously given up too soon. I ordered one from them, reasonable price. I may stock up.

I didn't realize how unworkable 4 cm was until I came to this forum yesterday. My solution is clearly not optimal. I don't think I can change the pressure myself on any of my three machines.

You can find information on adjusting the pressure for many cpap machines here: http://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-p ... tup-manual

By having the oxygen port open, you were reducing the amount of therapeutic pressure you were receiving and definitely making your therapy less effective. Many people find a pressure of 4 too low to be able to breathe comfortably.

I have tried the Gel nasal Mask which is supposed to replace the Comfort Classic. It's put so much pressure on my upper lip that my upper teeth bleed after a night's sleep. Place I bought the mask from says this happens sometimes. So I have the same problem now: what's the most comparable mask since one can no longer get the Comfort Classic?

If so, you have the mask too tight, adjust the mask at treatment pressure, don't over tighten it. The idea of the gel is seal with less pressure on your face. Jim

Have tried it tighter and looser. Just want another nasal mask like the Comfort Classic. What might work?

Unless someone has used the Comfort Classic it's impossible to recommend a mask "like" it.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I, too am having the same trouble replacing the Comfort Classic. When I saw that they had discontinued making it, I bought several, but eventually ran out. I tried a half dozen different masks, but nothing is close. I currently use the Wizard 210, but my nose touches bottom in a medium and a large is too large. Also, there doesn't seem to be uniform sizing throughout the industry or even a single company. I bought one medium Respronics mask that was more like a small.

So, Has anyone found a similar mask to the Comfort Classic?

Consider the Horse alive, Basically The Respironics Comfort Gel Mask is the same but even better. Get the same size you like in your old mask, With this line depending the headware makes a difference, I have the Gray, It lasts much longer.

The only problem I have found in Respironics, the "T" Bar top that the strap hooks to is weak, and breaks where the strap loops. I'd like to see the "T" Bar a little higher also, but it's still better than my old Classic! Just don't tighten the top too tight. Jim

I did try the Comfort Gel when it first came out. As I remember, it felt too bulky and heavy, but I'll give it another try. I think the Gel thing is over-rated, I still have an innerspring bed, which are almost impossible to find. Also, I am still angry with Respironics for discontinuing the mask. Oh, well. Progress

Thanks, Jim
