Turbinate reduction for non allergic rhinitis

Post by delriver » Tue Jun 14, 2016 5:21 am

Hi everyone, though Im not a CPAP user, I have the feeling that many of you will understand me and maybe have some good advice.

I have a non allergic (vasomotor, intrinsic rhinitis). This makes my nose stuffy all day, the blockage alternates from one nostril to the other and the pressure inside my nose is sometimes barely bearable. A year ago, being 25, I went through surgery (radiofrequency reduction) after having tried all kinds of treatments, even corticosteroids shots, because sprays were not enough, and finding no relief. It got to the point where I had my nose completely blocked, no airflow at all, and the crisis were terrible.

A year after surgery there are some little improvements, I can sleep straight nights with two pillows (I used to wake up in the middle of the night, in agony and choking) and the crisis are still terrible, but I can feel some airflow, its not a 100% blocked. However, during the day the blocking continues and my quality of life is still very bad, breathing gives me a lot of trouble and it looks like the surgery wasnt enough.

The ENT recommended to try a second RF surgery next september (14 months after the first), he says if we are conservative I might improve a little. He also said this is the last surgery we can do for now (my turbinates have a normal size now, the problem is their constant swelling, and the idea is to make them slightly smaller than the average, so the swelling is not as big, but NOT TOO SMALL as to prevent an empty nose syndrome).

What is your experience with this surgery? Someone with non allergic rhinitis as well who could tell his/her experience? Did any of you undergo a second surgery??

Thank you all for your time

You are lucky your surgeon seems conservative and cautious.
Have you tried using a nasal rinse?

Hi delriver,

I had a turbinate reduction along with a septoplasty and nasal valve repair over a year ago. Unfortunately, the improvements have been mild at best and things seem to be getting worse.

Unfortunately, all the usual remedies don't seem to help and I am debating whether to get allergy shots since I did test positive for about 4 things.

Reluctant to get a 2nd surgery but also pretty desperate for relief.

Do I assume correctly you were tested for allegies since you have a diagnosis of non allergic rhinitus?

Sorry, I know this isn't much help but I wanted to at least share my experience.

Yes, I do the nasal rinse three times a day but mostly for cleaning purposes, it doesnt really help the blocking. I also use Avamys, 4 times in each nostril every day (máximum dosage) and it helps very little, but not using it is even worse.

Hi 49er, if you are allergic and didnt treat this, maybe thats why your problem didnt get better (and maybe not).

The first thing a good ENT should do is try to figure out the cause of the problem and treat it, if possible, before even thinking of surgery. I have allergies to dust and pollen, but Ive been three years now undergoing an inmunotherapy treatment, and got a prick test last week which showed that all of my allergies reduced significantly. So the problem is not allergic. The ENT knew this anyway, when I got the surgery I had been two years with allergy shots, and the inflammation was too big, he said that turbinates dont swell like mine with regular allergies.

And thank you for sharing the experience, the more information you can give me, the better, I just want to have realistic expectations about whats coming. Hope my message was of any help and you find a way to get better.

Thanks, your post was helpful and could definitely be why my surgery didn't work. Good luck with your decision.

Hi, I registered on this forum because I saw this post.
I would like to know if you've gotten any answers yet, because my situation is the exact same as yours...Almost identical.
I have a conservative ENT who has reduced me once, and doesn't want to reduce further. Now the problem is just the swelling.
Initially, my ENT knew it wasn't allergic a long time ago, because of how swollen it was and how it should've came down with the medical treatment.
My right side is usually worse than my left.
Not sure what the answer is.
Did you figure out anything? I don't want to use any nasal sprays.
