Putting ice in the humidifier

OK here is a new one, I've been putting ice (made from distilled water of course ) into my humidifier chamber just before I settle down to sleep the past couple of nights.

I think it helps makes the air a bit cooler, obviously it melts but its refreshing to get to sleep with. My bedroom has always been the warmest room in the house being on the second floor with a vaulted ceiling. The room temperature at this time of the year is around 80 degrees. Personally I'd much prefer a cooler room temperature and the ability to sleep under a nice comforter instead of just a sheet.

The temperature here has bit a bit rough this summer, an almost record number of days of over 100 degree highs. The thermostats on both floors in my home are at set at 78, I can't set it them lower as the kids rooms get too cold for them and my wife actually likes our bedroom temperature. That along with the fact I already have a$250 a month electric bill

I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or concerns on adding the ice?

Another thing to try would be adding a bowl of ice right next to the air inlet on the machine.

Actually, that's been an "old" subject that comes up periodically.......like summertime.......for folks like you who live in warmer areas.

Way back when.......I posted that I keep some of my distilled water in smaller containers in the refrigerator and have on occasion put one of them in the freezer for awhile to get them good and cold, but not frozen......before adding it to the humidifier tank (since I've always used "passover" humidification). Depending on the opening to the HH tank, crushed ice could also be used. I don't think you want the water completely frozen, but need a little liquid (slushy) to help with the creation of water vapor to be added to the air.

But, anyway, it's been a fairly common topic from time to time.

there's people that freeze the water in their tanks, it works because even though the ice expands, in the open container, it expands *upwards* and exerts no force on the sides of the humidifier tank.

works great for those that like chilled air.

Ok thanks, I did do a quick search here but didn't see anything. I'll will have to look some more.

This is a little perspective from the other end of the temperature spectrum: For a long time I wanted to feel the warm tropical breezes in my nose while using my CPAP... I thought is was the right thing to do. I bought a Hibernite hose for max temp, cranked up the tank temp to max and told myself I was in heaven. Weeks later I was getting serious sinus problems and a nasty inflammation in my nose. Just sayin' that maybe what you think you need isn't what your body really needs. Currently I just use normal settings and things are fine. That said, give the ice a shot but beware of problems that may pop up and don't let your mind overrule what your body demands.

Thats the thing though, when its colder in winter (which lasts about 4 weeks here) I can have the a/c off no heat on and crank up the temp on the humidifier and love it. When i go kamping in a couple of weeks I'm going to go from 100 degree highs down to 70 degree highs, overnight lows in the low 40s. Also up from 1000 feet to 7000 feet in elevation and I will definitely be cranking up the humidifier.

I just can't seem to keep the climate control on auto mode year round anymore. On all of my machines that I use.

I tried putting ice into my brother's humidifier and it made no difference. He still complained the air was too hot, but if I turned the humidifier OFF, it wasn't enough humidity. Don't know what else to do other than to wait for a change in the temps. I'm hoping that with the switch to a new DME that they might find a mask that works better with a beard.

Yeah, I love the mild climes in AZ, mostly year round. The monsoons can get wet tho. I'm hoping to drive there this winter to do some of that year-round mt biking which I saw promoted in Bike magazine last month. I've ridden Flagstaff, Sedona and Prescott tons but need to go deeper south to get that desert vibe. I've got a friend from work who recently retired and bought acreage high up in the mountains near Sierra Vista so he can ride his Harley year round yet escape the killer summer temps. That sounds pretty great to me.

I've done a round trip 25 mile bike commute 4 days a week year round here year around for 5 years here. Everything from a few degrees below freezing to 110 degrees and monsoon storm headwinds of 30mph+. There are some pretty good multi use trails here.
If you are willing to head further south you need to try the rides around Sabino Canyon, Tuscon. There is a paved road for a tour trolley only, but you can go off on trails. Tuscon is the biking capital of Arizona IMO. Checkout Kartchner Caverns state park caves if you do.

Riding a Harley on route 66 in Williams, AZ and then on the 89A off the I17 down through Sedona, its on my bucket list

Putting ice in the humidifier chamber and having the humidifier 'on' makes no sense, in my opinion. I imagine all this does is to make the heating element work harder to melt the ice and bring the water up to the right temperature to maintain the dialled in humidity.

The only way this could have any effect is using passive humidification with the setting 'off'.
