Do insurance companies cover CPAP supplies off amazon?

Post by appo » Thu Nov 03, 2016 4:29 am

It seems that CPAP supplies (masks, machines, etc.) are a lot cheaper on Amazon than through a DME.

Do insurance companies cover CPAP supplies bought off Amazon?

I know my insurance (Aetna) covers out-of-network supplies at 80%, so I think that's pretty good - I would guess they do cover supplies from Amazon.

Thank you

You would need to ask your insurance directly if a receipt for an Amazon purchase would qualify as an out of network purchase. We have no way of knowing who your insurance company would consider an out of net work provider.
I have my doubts but you have to ask them directing to be sure.

Nearly all insurance companies will view this as an out-of-network purchase unless they have a contract with the seller.

Mine (Blue Choice) won't cover anything unless it comes directly from an approved vendor contracted with them. They simply do not care that I could save them lots of $$$ by buying online. I just turned 64 and now I have the whole Medicare minefield to negotiate soon. Can't wait !

A HSA might work differently, but it depends on the rules for your plan.
I was reimbursed for my Zeo from cpap.com. you never know.
Insurance companies are extremely restrictive,
no doubt because of unknown transactions between insurance and favored vendors.

Most likely they will cover it if you have out-of-network coverage. However, out-of-network generally has a higher (and separate) deductible, and a lower co-payment. Also, the limitations on how often you can order replacements would be applied.

My insurance covers out-of-network supplies but does require a vendor Tax ID number, etc.
I suspect that mine would treat an Amazon purchase the same way IF the seller is a DME.
As stated before, the only way to know is to call them and ask.

As mentioned, call and ask your insurance provider. I can tell you that original Medicare or Supplemental policies will not reimburse for cpap supplies. However, if you have an Medicare HMO supplemental, check with them.

With original Medicare, you pay less than any "legitimate" source, including our hosts.
With regular insurance, you need to do the math.
It can go either way.

In the last few years, I've had both United Healthcare and Cigna. Neither cover anything from Amazon.
