Respironics Premium Chin Strap

Post by roadwarrior » Sun Jul 23, 2006 4:36 pm

I have been using the Tiara chinstrap, but it just does NOT provide the rigid enough tension to keep my mouth closed. Does anyone have experience with the Respironics Premium Chin Strap? It looks as if you can actually adjust the tension so as to avoid my problem. Also the Tiara makes me sweat and is a pain in the arse. I can't say I like what appears to be the added bulk on the head and face I use an Activa most of the time and that would sure be a lot of stuff on my head and face, but I'm looking for results. Any thoughts here? Keep in mind I do NOT want one which does NOT provide adjustment. I need MORE tension than the typical expandable materials provide. It MUST be adjustable for added tension........

I have been using the Resp Premier for past 12 months & have been very happy with it. It had got a bit ragged so last night (funnily enough) I used my Topaz for the first time.

It seemed ok - bit flimsy compared to the Resp Premier - but I'll keeo using the new one for a while. Somewhere in my box of tricks I have a new Resp Premier & will switch to it if the Topaz fails the use test.

I can understand your comment about it making you sweat. It is winter here & so I don't expect that problem to show but it does have the feel that it may.

This chinstrap you mentioned (Premium Chin Strap) is almost identical to another one called the "Deluxe Chin Strap." Both are made of a light weight, stretch material, both easily adjusted to the desired holding power and both come with two smaller stretch straps for creating a 'halo" type secure fit. Both of these chinstraps close via velcro.
I have used both of these chinstraps and I find the Deluxe Chin Strap outlasts the Premium Chin Strap, as far as maintaining stretch and velcro function. (The "loop" part of the velcro closure just does not hold up after several weeks!)
The good part about either of these chinstraps is that they are pretty inexpensive, so frequent replacement may not be an issue
for some people.

Home Depot and Lowe's (and probably many other good hardware stores sell velstretch straps in at least two widths-approx 1 1/4 in. & 2 in. There are two to a package. They are adjustable, stretchy, and they are NOT flimsy. With the velstretch straps and a few strips of hook velcro you can make a chinstrap that looks like the old mumps scarf. To prevent slippage just add a strip of hook velcro where your regular headgear crosses the velstretch.

I was using a chin strap but it was slipping forward on my head and not doing anything. I couldn't figure out what to do with the extra strap that they provided, then I went to the panty hose around the head. Not bad but could use some more pressure on the chin (I am on who used to sleep with the mouth hanging wide open due to nasal congnestion that is largely gone with the Swift but years and years of mouth hanging open is tough to change).

The past few weeks I saw some post on using an ace bandage. I don't remember if it was for a chin strap but I thought I would try it. I have central A/C so I don't have to worry about my head getting too warm. But bottom line is it does the job the best of anything I have tried so far. Have to remember not to put it on too tight. Seems to be rough enought that it doesn't slip much. It is cheap, and easily replacable. Can use the metal clip to hold the end or just some tape which I already have for my mouth.
