DIY mouthguard

Post by NyNurse33 » Tue Sep 12, 2006 3:24 pm

Not sure if this is exactly what it is called..Rested Gal will know, she sent the link before. How difficult is this to make and does it really work. I bought a mouthguard a few weeks ago after I started grinding my teeth (which I started doing after starting cpap, from keeping my mouth closed, or at least trying to), and it was very bulky. But that was also when I was using the Ultra Mirage II and the bottom of the nose piece was cutting into my upper lip area. I checked out the link and it looks simple, just not sure if I'm understanding it correctly. The cut little "U" wraps around the actual guard?

Yep, I got that one....but how do you feel it worked? And was it easy to make?

I ttried a DIY mouthguard, but had to give it up as my jaw one one side started to click and feel stiff for a while in the mornings.
Also you may find that you have a lot of saliva when you first use the mouthguard , in my case that cleared up in a couple of days or maybe longer, but some people gave up because of it, so give it a good try before giving up.

I can tell you this much, the DIY mouthpiece that I made (I made 7 over a period of about 3 months) do work at solving the mouthleaks. But like MsPiggy says there was alot of salavia the first several nights. And my reason for not sleeping each night with the DIY, it was just too bulky and affected my bite after a coulple of nights use. I think that I simply was not a good crafter at this task! I tried many times , but just never got one to feel and fit good enogh to wear on a nightly basis! Now there have been others who have been able to make the DIY and really swear by them! Hey, at least it is cheap enough to try! No big $$$$ spent in case it does not work out for you!

I almost gave up trying to make one when I first tried. It's not the easiest thing to make, but wow, when you get one made that works, it does work.

Instead of trying to make the boil and bite part extend way around, I started cutting off the sides more and more and more - every time I'd feel a side rubbing a gum or bothering me in any way. The ones I made that were the most comfortable yet still stopped mouth leaks ended up being rather narrow..."holding" just at the upper front teeth/incisors.

Where to have the blob push the tongue just depends on what tongue position seals best for you. Worked best for me to have it shove my tongue straight backwards rather than holding the tongue against roof of mouth. I needed the tongue to widen considerably at the back to hold an air tight seal. Up against roof of mouth didn't get the job done. Air would sneak out around the sides of my tongue.

Everyone's mileage would vary, of course. Some might find it works better to have it lift the tongue to roof of mouth. Just have to keep re-doing it until it suits. I had sore finger tips many a time messing with the hot silicone. Was worth it to keep at it until I finally get one made that worked and was comfy.
