Remstar Pro 2 blower noise level - Problem Solved!
Remstar Pro 2 blower noise level - Problem Solved!
I have a Remstar Pro 2 with Cflex, I use it in the CPAP mode. The machine is quiet other than a kind of very soft pulsing blower whine. I notice it mostly during exhale, it gets softer during inhale. The sound never increases and is very consistent. It is quieter than my Resmed S8, but I seem to to fixate on the blower sound. The Resmed has a louder whoosh sound which doesn't bug me. This is a machine I purchased second hand as a backup. It has 1500hrs on the blower. Is this a normal sound for the remstar series blower? I was hoping some Remstar owners could chime in.
Thanks,
Dave

Whining
I have both a ResMed S8 AutoSet Vantage and a REMstar Auto w/ C-flex, Tank edition. I find both to be acceptably quiet. i do find the REMstar Auto to be somewhat quieter subjectively than the S8 is for me, because the noise of the REMstar is at somewhat of a lower pitch than that of the S8. I experience NO pulsing noise from either machine, other than the normal variations associated with inhaling and exhaling. There does appear to be significant sample variations regarding noise with ALL of the machines though. Snoredog is an expert on this, and you ought to correspond with him about this.
Hope this helps!

Also using the HH reduces the noise level, the odd's are your noise level is normal. My mask creates most of the noise from mine. Running a background sound is useful, mainly to mask your own breathing pattern, so you can forget about breathing. I use Nature sounds running all night. Jim

Have you ever tried it in CFLE mode? (to determine if the noise is consistent when the blower changes pitch with your breathing)
My Pro 2 developed a (very) slight whine when the blower changed from exhale to inhale. I sent it back to the factory (while it's still under warranty) and the noise is no longer there.
Best wishes,
Den

Thanks for the responses! I have tried it in both Cflex and CPAP modes and its the same, the filters are new. I do also use the HH with it. My wife thinks I'm crazy and says it sounds quiet. It must just be the frequency or pitch that bugs me, because my Resmed is much louder and I sleep like a baby. I was considering purchasing a second hand Remstar Auto, but wanted to see if this sound was the norm for Remstar.
Maybe you are right Goofproof. My old machine was an 8yr old Healthdyne Tranquility Plus, sounded like a Hoover Vac . Probably masked every sound in the house. The Resmed has a louder air sound, so something I'm used to.
I was hoping it wasn't a blower issue, returning isn't an option. Sounds like its not. Maybe I'll auction it and go for an Auto with very low hrs. Have been wanting to try one.

I have a Respironics Remstar Pro w/CFlex that was given to me and I was excited to start using it because it has a smart card, and my Remstar Plus does not. So I got it all set up with the correct pressure and CFlex settings, etc, and went to use it one night. I couldn't stand the whining noise it was making, especially on exhale. It was a pretty high pitched whine which I could have probably gotten used to, but my wife said there was no way she was listening to that all night. So back to the Remstar plus I went. My Plus is super quiet, but that Pro is just whiney as all get out. I don't think it's under warranty any more, but I'm thinking about contacting Respironics to see what they can do for me.
You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Yes of course. I was thinking of cflex as a feature rather than a mode but you are right it shows on the panel as a mode.

I also started with the plus but have switched to the auto.techno-snoreus wrote: My Plus is super quiet, but that Pro is just whiny as all get out.
The plus is most definitely quieter than the Auto, but luckily the noise doesn't bother me.
Both are much quieter than my snoring !

My noise issue is solved for the moment anyway. I took Doug's suggestion about cleaning the blower and it was pretty easy, it had a lot of fine dust on the plastic impeller parts.
I pulled the blower from the unit, popped open the impeller housing. Then cleaned the blades and plastic housing with just a damp paper towel, re-assembled and no more whining noise. I did also pull the motor and clean the bottom half.
Here are a couple pics of the dis-assembled blower.

I also started with a Remstar Plus, it's not really noisey. I now use a Remstar Pro2 w/Cflex is just about the same in noise.
I did notice that when both machines start to get noisey if you change the filters they seem to get quieter.and I use my machines in a lot of dusty conditions. When you got to an Endurance ride where there is anywhere from 50 to 150 horses you will know what I mean. Also if you live close to a freeway or expressway or any highway for that matter you should change the filters every 30 days I change my filters as soon as we get home from an Endurance ride. Or at least once a month.
Just my opinion.
And as someone said above both of my machines are quieter than my snoring. Just ask "She who must be obeyed"
