Best pillow for a side sleeper (sometime back)

Post by Muddpa » Wed Oct 25, 2017 1:06 pm

Hi everyone

I have been lurking for years and once in a while put in my two cents. My question is what is the best type of pillow for a side sleeper and sometime back sleeper (15% maybe) Also does the material of the pillow make a different? All of my current pillows go flat in six months. Please don't say if you buy cheap, you get cheap.

I use a Buckwheat hull pillow. Got it from Amazon.

This is going to depend so much on your personal preferences. Note the good tip at the end of this snippet -->
Fetal

The most popular way to sleep is favored by more than 4 out of 10 people, especially among women, who are twice as likely as men to sleep curled up on their side.

For the most part, it's a healthy way to doze, because it allows your spine to rest in its natural alignment. The fetal position might also help ward off conditions like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's: Recent research on animals suggests that your brain does a better job of clearing waste that can lead to these neurological diseases when you're sleeping on your side rather than on your back or stomach.

Make it better: Stretch out a bit. Pulling your body into a tight ball or curling forward too much limits your lungs and diaphragm. A more relaxed back encourages easy breathing.

Resting on your side, with your back mostly straight, can help cut down on sleep apnea. It can also nix neck and back pain since your spine stays aligned.

Make it better: Place a soft pillow or folded blanket or towel between your knees to ease pressure on your hips.

I also rotate between backsleeping and sidesleeping. The best pillow for me is a fairly thin, basic pillow that can be purchased at Walmart. "If you buy cheap, you can often get good."

Thanks for the replies. Will try the pillow between my knees. Also what size of buckwheat pillow?

IMO the only requirement any time you sleep is keeping your spine straight. So for a side sleeper you need just enuff to fill the void between your ear and the mattress (shoulder). I prefer foam pillows bc they don't sink over night. Recently started using a "knee pillow" for my head. It is too thick for my knees and just the right height yet small enuff that the mask can hang off the end.

Keeping the spine straight while back sleeping is IMO prob not possible using a pillow. In fact, when you see seniors walking all hunched over it is likely from propping their heads up while back sleeping for 50+ years. I have used a rolled up towel under the nape of my neck for back sleeping, but that means no pillow.

It may be hard to tell if/when your spine is straight so it helps to have another objective pair of eyes watching.

I have the same question - but more specifically I was hoping to hear from others who have used products like:

https://www.amazon.com/Endurimed-Large- ... HW1V4FMDB1

or

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/contou ... cover.html

Have others found success using any of these types of pillows that are made for us - and do any brands or makes stand out as better than others?

Thanks up front - I think one of these is going to be my next investment in trying to get more comfortable while my mask is on

I just use a regular pillow from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It's the kind with gussets on the sides. I sleep on my side and have had no trouble with my mask. Usually I have my hand tucked under the pillow in such a way that raises my face just a little off the pillow, but I used to sleep that way prior to cpap anyway. The only change I made to my bed arrangement is to have a "hose buddy" that holds the hose in place above my head.

Just like with masks and hose management, everyone is different. I've used an cervical support memory foam pillow for as long as I've been using CPAP.

If you go for a memory foam pillow, you want to make sure it is the higher quality "high density" memory foam (around 5 to 6 lbs/sqft or greater). The lower density memory foam pillows don't offer enough support IMO. A textured surface also is preferred.

I am a side sleeper and love this pillow. It has 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. I have been using it for 2 years and it is still the same as when I first received it. It squishes nicely.

I hope the link works.

I see it is on sale also. Good luck to you! Sleep is so important.

Yep. The link works.

That pillow is designed, made, and sold by one of our forum members, Bret (aka- SleepGuy).

A great guy with many very well made CPAP related products from his Pur Sleep line.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I'm just replying here to bump this topic up to the top of the list for one more day to see if anyone else will add their "favorite CPAP pillow" to this list before I order one tomorrow.

Anyone else? Anyone? I'm sure someone out there has a recommendation

Well ..........

OK.

Here's another one that's different from all the rest (but I can't vouch for it since I've never tried it).
