Rio Nasal Pillow Mask

Post by On the virge » Mon Nov 20, 2017 11:47 pm

My search skills are probably deficient but I found only one post that mentioned the subject mask. It seems similar to the P-10 which I use now but the straps on the headgear are adjustable. Has anyone used this mask and if so how did you like it?

I guess this is called a Bump. I am surprised that no one has commented on my post although several have read it. Perhaps they think I am trying to promote the item or sell it. The answer is very simple: when the DME called and asked whether we needed supplies, he asked my wife if she knew about the RIO which he described as similar to the P10 (which we use) but had adjustable straps. My wife actually thought he was talking about a P10 with adjustable straps. My search of the forum came up with one post. Given all the threads I've read discussing the fit of the P10 and stretching head band, I expected to have someone say: "tried it, didn't like it" or "gee, never heard of it". But, silence was not what I expected.
So I "replied" to my own post to keep it from falling off the page.

Never heard of it, so I went to Google. Looks like a few *other* online suppliers carry it, but our host does not. I won't presume to speak for them, but if I had my guess it's because it's a lesser-known manufacturer. Looks solid enough in theory and I might be interested in trying it myself, if the price were right.

Sorry we couldn't be more help.

I hadn't ever heard about the Rio either.
3 B has quite a few masks similar to the various ResMed masks...I actually got a chance to see one that was very similar to the Swift FX.
The nasal pillows were a bit firmer than the Swift FX which I suppose could be both good or bad depending on what a person wants.
The short hose assembly wasn't as flexible as the Swift FX short hose and for me that would be a negative. I like the flexibility of a hose.

Historically 3 B products are more budget friendly but I have never really had a chance to use one of their products...just haven't ever got one to try and the one that I had that was similar to the Swift FX I was going to try but then someone else needed a mask right then...so off it went before I got a chance to actually use it.

So I was one of the people who read your post earlier but didn't comment. I was short on time this morning and really didn't have much to say since I have never actually seen the Rio.
So we will keep giving you a little bump just in case someone here has actually seen/used the Rio.
If not...someone has to be the first...and we volunteer you to be the first.

Thanks for the replies. My wife and I will each get the mask and five pillows next Tuesday (they are in the mail). My wife uses the P10 for her with large pillows and I use the regular with large pillows. We will definitely "report" our initial observations as well as after about a week. For reference, our pressure range is 8-11, avg 9 and with Aflex 2 using PRS560. I have short hair; she does not have long hair. We have been "getting" several months from our P10 and pillows. Since YMMV, it helps to know what we are "driving".
Happy Thanksgiving

On Friday we received the mask and three sizes of pillows in a sealed manufacturer's plastic envelope. Upon opening the envelope, we immediately noticed a strong smell (like latex, silicone or plastic). I was anxious to check it out and I wore it for 10-15 minutes while determining how the straps work and also connected my CPAP and ran it for 1-3 minutes to see how the seal worked. After this short period of time, I had to take it off because the smell became over-powering. Over the next two days, we washed everything six times with liquid dish detergent letting it air dry. While the smell had dissipated a lot, it was still there and neither of us was comfortable with the idea of breathing through it all night long. We returned them today.

What we observed: 1) the straps are thicker. The one that goes over the top of the head connects to each side of the frame through a slit so that the end of the strap folds back on itself and attaches to itself with "velcro" thus allowing for adjustment of the strap's length and tightness of fit. As you see in the illustration, the other strap is attached in a fixed position meaning that your strap placement is determined by the straps unless you "force" the position in which case you create little lumps at the strap connection.
2) the strap that goes on top of the head has a short strap that can hold the hose in position if you wish. With the hose "captured" this way the angle of the rotating ball in socket swivel is optimally positioned.
3) the rotating ball in socket swivel has one problem that I quickly discovered. The swivel has an angle turn which is probably very accommodating; but, at one point when I was connected to the CPAP, I turned my head while the hose was constrained (like under the bed pillow) the fixed angle of the swivel pulled the mask away from my face because the swivel became a lever.
4) It seemed just as quiet as the P10
5) It is very light
6) Pillows felt very soft although they did not have that cone within a cone design used by the P10 and I don't know how that might affect prolonged usage.

In short, we sent them back because there was no improvement over the P10 (from our perspective) that made it worthwhile to try to resolve the smell issue. We also were not sure what chemicals we would be inhaling and we couldn't rely on the experience of others given the small to non existent user base. I don't like trashing a product when my experience and needs are likely to differ from others. On the one hand, there are folks that will find the smell (out-gassing) solvable and the benefits to them worthwhile and there are others that can't afford to waste money trying long shots.

For us, it didn't work

Thank you for sharing your experience. I looked at this mask and it looked promising, but apparently there are issues with its manufacturing that need to be corrected.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
One would certainly hope the manufacturer would have tried to address the odor issue.
No doubt the DME was hoping for a bigger profit than usual.
Some folks are less sensitive to weird odors, but in your nose--most of us not so much.
