You don't have to own it and use it to know this.
I would possibly use this but only AFTER I had washed my mask first and then I would still want to wash my mask *again after* using it ~~~because I LOVE my Dr. Bronner peppermint smell and the dreamware mask really does not like oil.

So this would only be for the germaphobe overachiever perfectionist in me. In a zillion years I would never use it in place of washing with soap and water. I don't think I could keep a mask on my face five minutes without being washed for oils, grime, saliva, snot, etc. <I'd be SoSkeeved>

~~~but that's *me*
This thread is kind of funny. Reminds me of a guy who hates Ford trucks. Now he's never owned one and never been in one. But he read somewhere where they were crap.
I have a SoClean and have been using for around 3 -4 years. I've never seen any kind of living crap on my mask, in my hose or in my humidifier chamber.
I don't have a microscope to check for critters but I've never had any respiratory issues while using it.
Eventually the hoses pick up a yellow tinge from the ozone exposure but they're quite usable. The ozone odor is very noticeable during the cleaning cycle so it pumps out quite a bit.
A couple of years ago, the latch broke on my unit, well out of warranty. I called them and they wanted to have a look so I mailed it to them. About a week later, I get back a new one. No charge.
There is a nag message about every three months letting me know the 2 filters need changed. I've looked at the filters and they remain clean. So with a 2 button press, I dismiss the message for another 3 months or so.
I believe it works as advertised. I know I feel better about my equipment.
Most of the microbes in your home are HARMLESS, so you would not have gotten sick either way.
There's no strange smells. (The vapidity of this statement "it pumps out quite a bit" boggles me... being able to detect an odor means absolutely nothing at all in regards to it's effectiveness... but "hey, I smell it, it must be working!!!!")
Ozone is a particularly nasty smell.
It invariably stings my nose and throat.
I no longer play with plasma balls.
The STENCH remains on my fingertips.
Which simply means different strokes for different folks. It's YOUR money and you are entitled to spend it any way you like. Having sleep apnea isn't the most fun, so if using a SoClean machine helps you feel better about the equipment, I would say that's a win. Many say that if you think the machine actually does what it says, you are experiencing a placebo effect. Even if that is true, who cares! If your numbers are good and you feel good... that's all that matters!
No, I don't use a SoClean machine.
Yeah ... there comes a point when the payoff just isn't worth the stench on your fingertips anymore ~~~
Neither cpap nor money makes me sick.
But my grandkid goes to public school, where too many parents do not have sick child daycare.
This means their kids "get" to go to school when they are CONTAGIOUS, but mostly asymptomatic.
Grandparents are often the first line of emergency sick kid daycare;
so our darling's contagion stops at home. And Grandma winds up in the ER with bronchitis.
Luckily, Grandma is a tough old frog! Still hopping--and pappin'.
I would like to thank both the people who have a SoClean and like it, as well as the ones who don't like it for whatever reason, for commenting.
I will pass the comments on to my sister.
After that, it's up to her to determine if they have $300 to spend on the unit.
My own personal opinion, based on the fact that I do not have $300 to spend on one, is that I can do quite a bit of scrubbing with a $5 bottle brush from a pet store, a tooth brush, and some Dr. Bonner's for that $300. In fact, that $300 would pay for two sets of entries for Barn Hunts for my Harper Dachs. And that I am more interested in Barn Hunting than in a fancy cleaning device.
But, once again, thank you for the opinions on BOTH sides of the fence. Information AND opinion are useful.
