puffy, swollen eyes

Post by just visiting » Wed Mar 02, 2005 6:32 pm

Thanks to someone directing me to this site, I have had almost one solid week of deep, uninterrupted sleep! The first time in years. I am using a Fisher Paykel CPAP with heated humidifier set at 14 and wear a Breeze mask with nasal pillows. I'd been struggling with this set-up since October with few suggestions from my doctor. Thanks to postings from Rested Gal and others I now have the head gear in a perfect position, my hose is hanging above my head via a scrunchie and hook, and I bought a memory foam pillow which prevents my mask from squishing into my pillow. The only problem I have now is the fact that I wake up with my eyes almost closed from being so swollen. It seems as though my eyelids and surrounding areas are full of fluid. It takes hours to recover. I mentioned this to my doctor and she said she had never heard of it. She then told me to wear a sleep mask. This does not help and since the machine is finally working well, the swelling is worse.
Has anyone heard of this and do you have suggestions?

Welcome ,

Yes I have heard of this. My neighbor recently had this problem with his new cpap. He had a plain cpap set at 18 ! We talked about getting him a auto unit. Well he did just that. His average pressure is now 9. His swollen eyes are gone. He now uses a humidifier also. I've heard of others here with the same problem but haven't "seen" them. Sounds like a problem an auto unit will help with.

Cheers,

Chris

I had that when I first started. I was at 16 and the doc set it back to 12. It has since been raised back to 16 with no swelling.

I started using machine with mask on 12-27-04 and have had puffy, swollen eyes ever since. Switched to Breeze end of Jan and still have problem. Regular MD said don't use machine for 3 nights, still had swollen eyes plus stopped breathing a lot. Sleep doc said don't use for 2 weeks--no regular eyes, no breathing, no help. Regular doc sent me for EEG of head--no surprise--found nothing in there (!) and no cause for problem. Going to see an opthamologist on Tues. Left eye is almost swollen shut all the time, right eye is only a little better. Peripheal vision is just about gone. Hope I find out something on Tues--would be nice to look halfway normal again and be able to see.

Wonder if you had a leak and it "pushed" something into your eye? Let us know what the doc says.

Good Luck!

Swollen eyes

Post by Grant I » Mon Mar 07, 2005 8:09 am

I agree with Mike's thought--I have awakened with swollen eyes. Actually, my eyes were red (everyone thinks it's 'pink eye') and usually sealed shut with dried eye fluid. They remain red, swollen and irritated all day.

Turns out it WAS leakage, and my mask cushion needed to be replaced ("ResMed Mirage Full-Face Series II"). Got a new mask, and no more red, swollen eyes.

Grant...I am a doctor, but am not offering professional advice.....

Pink eyes

I was wondering if anyone else had the problem I have.My left eye becomes a little irritated at times, not all the time, and I have my suspicions that it is air leakage from my mask.It also gets a little sore,I irrigate with some sterile eye moisturizer with no preservative, and it clears up in a couple of days. This has only started since I am on cpap.
So,I concentrate on the position of my mask and try to make sure there is no leakage.

Hi all-

The FP with heated humidifier that the DME sent e home with had no humidifier settings- does this 14 refer to the heat or the pressure?

I'd think the guest's "14" is referring to his cpap pressure, unless he made a typo about the heat setting and meant to write that he has his humidifier's heat turned up to 4. I'd bet on 14 being the cpap pressure. Just a guess.

Is there such a thing as a heated humidifier that doesn't have a way to adjust the heat setting? That would sound like a passive cold water humidifier to me. But, I dunno - I've always had heated humidifiers and their heat setting could be adjusted, one way or another - with a knob on the F&P HC 150 separate stand-alone heated humidifier, or by buttons on the machine....grrrrr..I like the knob better.

Rrested girl-
You're right- the FP I had didn't have number settings for the humidifier but could be adjusted- it's just that I didn't notice any difference when I adjusted it. And- it makes sense that the pressure was 14- I just wondered if there was something about humidifiers I missed.
Thanks for your reply,
MG

The FP I have does have numbers on the humidifer but they are from 1 to 4 only. He has to be referring to the pressure he is set under.

Guest,

I think that Mike hit it right on the nail! Check to be sure you don't have a leak that could cause your eye(s) to catch a cold too. That's when your eye gets that gucky liquid and you can't open them up. I am sure there's a technical word for it, but that's what my mom always told me when I was small....."Honey, your eye has a cold, use hot compress and it will go away."

I heard it more than once when I was little and now I repeat those words to my monsters. Granted, I just started on cpap and I personally haven't had that problem. But, that makes sense. My baby niece has an eye cold and so, that's what made me think of it. Maybe it's not your cpap after all, just the goofy weather.
puffy eyes & Doctor's verdict

Post by andilsw » Tue Mar 08, 2005 9:22 pm

Well, went to opthamologist. Having surgery on May 11 to remove excess skin above eyes. Since I use Breeze, he doesn't know why eyes are staying swollen but since eyelid is now covering eyelashes, he says I need it done medically. Well, at least since is medical, insurance will pay for eye tuck!! Wonder how I can get rest of body done?!?! Sure don't like this ageing process! Oh, to be 23 again!!
