1st Night w/AirMini - a Review

A few days ago I bought a ResMed AirMini via a “30 day return” offer. For the past several months I’ve used a Transcend for travel and while therapy delivery was fine, I’ve never been happy with the design, size, weight, and especially the fact that it’s software is NOT Mac compatible. I almost returned it at purchase for that reason (the AirMini had not been released yet).

So last night was my first “test” even though I’m not traveling. I’m much happier with the overall design and weight. It is smaller and lighter than the Transcend.

It does seem to be noisier - a common complaint I’ve seen- at least to me. By that I mean the breathing noise I hear at the mask connection seems louder but a recording made on my iPhone placed on my headboard doesnt suggest a partner or anyone next to me on an airplane would notice it.

I did this test w/o the in line “humidifier” - living in Louisiana we have humidity to spare, and I routinely do not use the humidifier on my S9 at home.

I also love the Bluetooth connectivity with their smartphone app (Android AND iOS). I don’t think it tracks near the info that SleepyHead does but at 6.5 hours of use I scored 94 on their 100pt scale with 0.9 episodes p/hour.

I DO NOT like the proprietary hose connections, a major FAIL by ResMed in my opinion. Hopefully a 3rd party option will be forthcoming.

I do like the auto on/off when you take the mask off/on. Getting up for a toilet break in the middle of the night I don’t have to fumble with finding the machine’s power button.

The limited mask options are not a concern for me as I was already using the P10 nasal pillows. It’s frustrating the standard P10 mask isn’t interchangeable as I use that with my home machine but at least the pillows themselves are.

Overall I’m quite pleased and, pending a couple more trials, will likely soon have a lightly used Transcend for sale.

Somebody else did this to adapt the hose.

As I noted in another earlier post - AirMini Hose Adaptors - My biggest frustration with the AirMini is ResMed's decision to use proprietary hose connectors that block the use of any standard cpap hose/tubing. I've conceived a plan to hack around this - just as the other poster did to hack around the mask connector.If I have one marketing tip for ResMed it would be to create and release a simple adaptor for both ends of their ArMini - the machine and the masks - to facilitate the use of common hoses. The Transcend is made with a simple 3'plastic tube connector that mates the machine with standard tubing -it boggles the mind why ResMed did not do the same thing.

This simple bit of plastic mates a standard cpap tube to the Transcend rather than requiring a proprietary tube - and as such, any mask can then be used with the Transcend. Instead ResMed chose to go proprietary - at both ends!
