Sleep Apnea cause chronic muscle cramps in arms and legs?

Post by 73dallen » Fri Apr 27, 2018 7:34 pm

Hi - I have just been referred to a sleep study by my neurologist suspecting that OSA is the cause of my muscle cramps. I expect that I have it, based on how my wife complains of my snoring and how she's had to nudge me before thinking I had stopped breathing.

My question is this, has anyone experienced severe muscle spasms from OSA? Not talking just in the calves, but also in arms?...mostly anywhere? I overworked my muscles about 4 weeks ago and they never really healed, and since have been cramping up severely? most of the day and in the morning. Has any experienced something similar and received relief once started using CPAP?

Thanks, Al

Unlikely, but lately I have been having it, and my Sleep Apnea treatment is 100% successful.
Low Magnesium has been stopping my muscle cramps, and helps restless leg problems also. Jim

See a doctor... your description is way too much for anything Cpap or OSA can even be related to, never mind cause. Are you taking any meds? All Cpap does is blow a little air into your throat to widen your airway... nothing else, but statin drugs will do it.

Guilty as charged, didn't think of that the statin was working too well, so I cut the dose 80 mg in half, last time i filled the drug carriers I forgot and used the full 80 mg ones, that's about when the cramps started.

I saw the Dr. with new labs, he told me to keep them at 80 mg, they now say in my case the cholesterol can't get too low. LHL was under 100.

So I plan on using Magnesium to control the cramps, it works well. I'm one of Puritan Pride's Gold Customers. U.P.S., man had my address on speed dial. Jim

Like goofproof, I take magnesium and that keeps leg and toe cramps from happening. If I go several days without the cramps come back, and I'm up in the evening or, worse yet, during the night walking the floor to get rid of it. Suggest starting out at 400 or 500mg (usually one pill). Magnesium can cause diarrhea if too much is taken.

Been on magnesium for 2 weeks, no relief. No statins. Rarely sleep anymore fearing something else.

Then why are you on the internet instead of at the ER?

Been there, neurologist, rheumatologist, lot’s of workups being done. Was just looking for some comfort from someone that could relate.

Sometimes not cramps at all, but rhabdomyolysis, a potentially deadly condition.
If your PCP blows it off, go to the ER.
The emergency situation may bring in people with more current education.

It's possible that the muscle cramps are anxiety related. Wondering if the doctors you are seeing have suggested that. Stress/anxiety can cause muscle cramps or at least make them worse. While you are waiting to have your sleep study, try meditation or some form of relaxation. Let us know how you are doing.

Definitely you will need to treat your Sleep Apnea whether it's the cause of your cramps or not. Even if it's not, your tolerance for pain is likely to increase. Also, any medication that you may take for it will work better if you're well rested.
