2nd night, heated hose tore

Post by macmermaid » Sun Jul 08, 2018 2:34 pm

So second night, around 4 am, it sounded like popcorn. Was popping above my mask. If i mived the hose a bi, it would stop for a bit. Gave up and took it off at about 6 am.

Turnd out the heated hise tore where goes into the machine connector.

Is this possibly due to my own mishandling, or defective hose.

Ordered two new ones from Amazon, but should i send thus back to coap.com?

Thanks.

While I wouldn't completely rule out a defective hose, I would guess that you may have mishandled the hose.

Any chance you kinked the hose while setting it up?

You should keep a spare hose on hand for such emergencies. I suggest you order two. Also, call you DME and report that the hose is defective. They ought to replace it. If they agree to replace it, I suggest still ordering one hose to keep on hand as a spare.

I destroyed two hoses within the first year--none since.
When I am very tired, I don't always know my own strength.

When you get your new hoses get some of this tape and wrap the end that goes on the machine, half on the large rubber connector and half on the hose. This gives support to the hose where it attaches to the connector. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/cramer ... letic-tape You can get the tape at Walmart, it's stretch tape like the use at the blood bank.

That will not work where the swiveling heated hose attaches to a ResMed machine.

Unfortunately the OP has given us no details.

Thanks for the idea of wrapping the hose at the connection.

CPAP.com replaced the hose. I'd ordered two from Amazon. While I was waiting, I tried the non-heated hose, which "seems" to be fine. So now I have three back up heated hoses!

It's a ResMed Airsense 10 for Her. I need to put the info at the bottom of my post.

You can add it to your profile....see mine below.
If you don't know how

FWIW...I have never had any hose tear at the humidifier connection end (or mask end either) so maybe it just had a weak spot in it but watch how you handle the hose and grip the rubber part and not the hose part when fiddling with things.
You can of course reinforce with some sort of tape that connection point where the hard rubber part transitions to the flexible hose part.
It does seem like if a hose wants to tear it is at the rubber end part. Easy to reinforce it to buy peace of mind.

And yes, it can be done to the AirSense machines and its weird little connector to the humidifier because the taping is done at the flexible hose to hard rubber part and doesn't have to extend back to where the hose plugs in to the humidifier.

The only problem I had with a heated hose was stretching of the mask connector from disconnecting the mask too often for cleaning.
The hose lasted about a year before I replaced it because the mask would sometimes disconnect during the night.

I have had this happen at times over the years and we all know that frequent disconnects isn't done at my house. I think that sometimes the rubber coupling at the mask end just gets a bit less "grippy" or soft for some reason and it's worse with some masks and not so bad with others.

When this happens there is an easy fix...just add a little tape around the end of the mask part that goes inside the hose coupling so that the fit is a little snugger. You don't actually tape the mask to the hose....just wrap a few layers of some sort of tape around the part of the mask that fits inside the hose coupling and that will make it less likely to fall out.
Just be careful and don't use so much that you can't insert that little part into the coupling. Doesn't take much.
For me it was maybe 3 layers of plain ordinary Scotch tape.

So it can be fixed without buying a new hose if someone doesn't want to get a new hose for whatever reason.
