Anyone know about Serial Numbers on the AirSense/AirCurve machines?

Post by Pugsy » Mon Jul 30, 2018 9:01 am

Resmed doesn't make it easy for us to figure out machine birthdays to help figure out if a used machine might have any warranty left on it.

Used to be the Serial number only gave us a hint as to where the machine was made (either 22 or 23 being the first 2 digits) and the second 2 digit being the year.
I forget which is Australia or else where...the 22 and 23 part and does really matter
but wondering if the second 2 digits being 16 means 2016 and thus most likely not much (if any) warranty time remains.

Anyone have any ideas??

They still do manufacture sequencing with the serial number, so your assumption on the 2016 manufacture is very likely to be correct. The specific month within that year does not seem to be comprehensible to end-users, but they do have intra-year cutoffs that determine which models need to be pushed remote software updates vs. which ones already have the update.

Look under the chart on page 2 for an example of them using this sequencing:

So, if one buys a used machine privately with no documentation, does the warranty automatically follow the machine with no action required on the part of the current owner?

And where would one take or send said privately purchased machine for service if the need were to arise?

Completely non-transferable. You would need the original end user to make any warranty claim.

Well....that's the official statement but there are ways around that depending on who you know.
And I know someone who can make it happen.

Found out the machine still in question still has warranty time available until March of next year....that's acceptable for the deal I got on a very gently used AirCurve 10 VAuto yesterday for someone (it's going to someone else).
One of those craigslist deals (local, I picked it up in person) that I would call a steal of a deal for that machine.

Generally speaking I consider these hot deals on machines...buy at your own risk and you are saving so much money you are self insuring for the warranty. I don't expect a warranty when I buy privately.

So if a warranty is really important to a person...buy it from a retailer that offers some sort of warranty and be prepared to pay for it up front.

How would you use the warranty? All ResMed repairs have to go through the DME it was sold through, AFIK, and the warranty is from date of sale not date of manufacture (I get that if the date of manufacture is less than 2 years you can assume it is within warranty, but an older SN might have just been sold for the first time a few months ago and have more warranty left.)
This warranty is only available to the initial consumer. It is not transferable. If the product fails under conditions of normal use, ResMed will repair or replace, at its option, the defective product or any of its components.

This Limited Warranty does not cover: a) any damage caused as a result of improper use, abuse, modification or alteration of the product; b) repairs carried out by any service organisation that has not been expressly authorised by ResMed to perform such repairs; and c) any damage or contamination due to cigarette, pipe, cigar or other smoke.

Warranty is void on product sold, or resold, outside the region of original purchase. Warranty claims on defective product must be made by the initial consumer at the point of purchase. This warranty replaces all other expressed or implied warranties, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Some regions or states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you.

It might be appropriate here to mention acbio.com.
Expired or voided warranty--it might be worth while to let them do their thing, if needed.
