Childhood Apnea & Bedwetting

Post by kteague » Wed Feb 07, 2007 7:24 pm

This poll is born out of another thread in an attempt to see if there's a pattern.

It was suggested to define, separate or broaden the age range for "child" so as to include older youth. Adding another range might make someone fit more than one category and muddy the waters, so let's say that the child category can include the teen years also. Hope that helps for those whose symptoms might have started or been recognized a little later.

*bump* C'mon guys, vote! I'm curious.

Also, for those of you who haven't been around long, if you don't get something confirming you just voted right after you click the "submit" button, vote again. Frequently, it doesn't "take" the first time for some reason.

Thank you for posting this, Kathy!

I'm really curious to see how this turns out. I answered that I was a wetter, but I wasn't aware of any apnea symptoms.

But then, I didn't know as an adult either! I had to be told I was not breathing at times. And even then, I hadn't heard of apnea nor what it could do to you. It was only after someone watched a television show where they talked about it and forced me to get a sleep test.

Oops, I guess I wasn't logged in. We have 266 views so far, but only 17 votes. I know bed wetting isn't a very enticing subject, but I think this is really helpful to know! Come on nonvoters...help us out!

I tried to vote---but it wouldn't let me after repeated attempts.
I wanted to answer on behalf of our DS, age 8, who is a bedwetter with sleep apnea, and allergies. He had his tonsils/adenoids removed at age 3 because they were so enlarged. At age 7, I noticed he was having apnea and waking up so tired and lethargic. We took him back to ENT, and they did xrays to confirm that his adenoids had grown back and were blocking 80% of his little airway. Another surgery to remove adenoids and an additional sinus procedure....and one year later he is still having apnea and bedwetting...and snoring...and tired. Poor little guy. Thank God for a great product called Good Nights...which are pullups for bigger kids. My OSA hubby wet the bed until he was 13. They both have the same small airways structure/chin....so it's interesting that they both have the same issues. They didn't make Good Nights when my husband was little.

He has his first sleep study soon. Let's hope he can receive some serious help...

He also sleeps with his neck hyper extended....it pains me to watch him sleep.

I voted. I was a wetter, and my biggest reason for believing I had apnea was my mother telling me about when I was little I used to stop breathing (the doctor, told her it was NORMAL.) so she started to sleep with me and wake me if it took too long for me to start breathing again.

So yes and yes.

Although I remember not wanting to get out of bed in the mornings and being tired--as in "Born Tired" , I never had anyone tell me I snored or stopped breathing so I voted No and No. (But then as an adult I snored only on rare occassions pre-cpap).

Since there wasn't a category in the poll which stated you were or were not a bedwetter and maybe weren't aware of apnea I had to choose the one that said you were not a bedwetter and did not have apnea as a child. I feel I probably have always had apnea but only became aware of it after marriage when my husband noted the problem.
Polls are of interest but usually don't include enough categories to give a correct answer without qualifying it in some manner.

I wasn't aware of having Sleep Apnea problems until I was about 50 when it had already damaged my heart. I was a wetter past middle school age.

It's the weekend, I think the trolls are back (so many short posts by people just signed up today) on old, old threads. But, 10032011, if you're legitimate, sorry - that wouldn't be directed at you.

I think that some, browsing the forum, are brought out of their shells by a poll,
And not realizing what a mess the old ones are, . . .oh, never mind!
