Self adhesive medical wrap tape
Self adhesive medical wrap tape
I've been using a piece of self adhesive wrap (the kind a vet might use to wrap a dog's leg etc) to keep my mouth shut at night. It stretches nicely, lightly adheres to my skin and my mask keeps it in place. It kind of has a smell at first, because it's made of some kind of non slip material... probably a latex or rubber. There is also a non latex version. It does a better job than tape does of keeping my mouth closed and the inside of my mask dry. Anyone know if having this on the mouth is a bad idea? This is the stuff I'm talking about... sorry that the picture is obnoxiously large

Vetwrap: quite versatile.
The smell is a bit irritating to me, but YMMV.
Expensive at the pharmacy--cheap at the farm store.
Keep away from the ends of your hose--the adhesive reacts with rubber/vinyl, whatever it is.
It also attracts dirt-so must be discarded before it gets really gross.

Re: Self adhesive medical wrap tape
Medical tape like that is commonly known as "Coban" wrap. That was a brand name, made by Johnson and Johnson I think.
The only thing I would worry about for mouth taping is that if you need to get it off quickly because you vomit or your nose is plugged up it might be resistant if you pull it fast or hard. When it bunches up it acts like iron. I would suggest making a small little slit just in case of an emergency.

Yes, vet wrap! I was surprised by how well it has worked, and didn't realize at first its potential to stick to me AND the mask It's more of a non slip stick, but I think you know what I mean. At first I was wrapping it all the way around my neck and mouth, because I thought the only way it would stay was if it had itself to stick to. That was expensive! When I got to the end of the roll, I just used the remaining 4“ or so, and realized the whole wrapping around my head was overkill. It does double duty as it keeps my mouth closed and works as a mask liner.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 5:09 pmVetwrap: quite versatile.

I just hope whatever it is made of isn't leaching into my tissues!

Good point and good idea about making a tiny slit.Janknitz wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 5:28 pmThe only thing I would worry about for mouth taping is that if you need to get it off quickly because you vomit or your nose is plugged up it might be resistant if you pull it fast or hard. I was going to mention that too. The pharmacy and grocery store have skin colored very expensive wrap. But at the local feed store (think horses), you can get vet wrap pretty cheaply and in lots of pretty colors. I use it to wrap my wrist sometimes. I stock up when I go to the pet store that has a horse section.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 5:09 pmVetwrap: quite versatile.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Re: Self adhesive medical wrap tape
Hey gang- on the subject of tape for your mouth--I'm considering it. I have two chin straps currently but I have to bunch them *tight* to keep my mouth closed (I have a pretty strong jawline). The result is it actually causes my face to swell it's so tight, so not exactly comfortable.
Here's the caveat--I have a beard. Am I gonna wax myself if I use Coban or the vet tape?
Also, has anyone noticed that it's actually opening the *throat* that causes air to leak into/through the mouth and not opening the mouth itself? I found several times even with the chin strap in a decent place keeping my mouth shut that air would leak into my mouth and "push" my lips apart to escape, waking me up. I don't think it was an issue of my mouth coming open so much as my throat. Does that even make any sense? I'm still kinda new at this...thanks.

OMG thanks, Palerider! I wouldn't have even had any idea what to search for--you're the best. Yeah, seems I have same issue--not the mouth coming open but the throat. Genius! Thank you!
