Re: Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard
Very doubtful. I've worn them ALL. They pretty much stay in place if they fit correctly. The boil and bite ones didn't work for me as my mouth is small and those guards are not. There is a great place online, however, that offers a variety of guards...upper and lower...and they send you an easy kit to make your own impression and mail it back. Then they make you a custom fit guard for about $100. TeethNightGuard.com.
I have never even come close to choking or swallowing it. Correctly fitted ones even form a slight suction to your teeth after being in your mouth for a bit.

Re: Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard
"Can it be swallowed?"
Only if you bite it into small enough pieces.
I have noticed that they stick together pretty well.
My grandson chewed on his, but it remained in one piece,
even though it looked like a used dog toy at the end of football season.

thank you. I have been giving my boil and bite the stink eye thinking if it could be swallowed, I would probably do it. I really do well with the N20 mask but lately I have started the night well and around 4 I get the beeps from an open mouth. It seems when I go into the dreaming level. I'll keep trying!

Re: Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard
I'm glad you ask this question. It gives me a place to post a "thank you" to CPAPtalk people who might have saved my life. A week or so ago I was reading comments about dry mouth solutions and I had a serious "OMG moment".
I've been using ....(for over a year!!!) ... using therabreath lozenges. I use about three a night. I can unwrap and put one in without even waking up. I keep my tongue pressed against it, it has helped me train my tongue to the roof of my mouth. It was all good. ... until I got a really bad "what if" feeling. I had never shared this particular detail here or with anyone, but when I mentioned it to a friend he was horrified. I guess it would have only taken one cough or just one quick inhale, one moment gone wrong and I could have sucked that hard lozenge candy down my windpipe. How that never occurred to me I do not know?
I guess I was so focused on the healthiness of keeping a very wet mouth to fight plaque and just generally create the best mouth I could have since I had noticed some drying from the CPAP use?
I immediately went out and bought biotene mouth wash, mouth sprays and gels. I do not like them nearly as well but I feel deep down that what I was doing before was way too risky.
I had to get braces from tongue thrusting caused by apnea/ cpap. After the braces came off and my teeth were back in to alignment I now wear a retainer to bed every night to keep them perfect. The top touching the bottom is very "grippy" and it helps me keep my mouth closed, helps with grinding and clenching, and of course keeps my teeth in line.
If I had any orthodontic issue I would definitely get the invisalign braces as I think they would be perfect for CPAP use. It is always great to get a two for one bonus. I would definitely invest in a great fitting mouth piece if I had any fear at all of something coming loose.
I do not belong to or read at any other sites like this on the internet but I find this place so helpful. I'm sure I would not have kept up with CPAP if left on my own. Which would have been a HUGE loss for me.

I probably could, if I tried really, really hard. But I'd rather not.Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard

Re: Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard
While in the hospital, I'm asked not to use the dental appliance that I wear each night for TMJ syndrome. The staff fears I may swallow it or that it might get in the way should I need to be put on a ventilator. This appliance is really quite large - much bigger than the bite guards, plus it's rigid. When I talked to my dentist about this, he just laughed and said, "Well...I suppose Houdini could get it down, but he'd be a little worse for wear..." He told me that even if I could get it sideways somehow, it still wouldn't block my airway.
I've never choked on it. I just put it in and forget that it's there.

The short: No you can’t swallow a mouth guard. They're quite large and generally stay in place if fitted correctly.Grace~~~ wrote: ↑Sat Aug 25, 2018 6:36 pmI'm glad you ask this question. @ Grace - I also had braces and had a tongue placement (but not necessarily thrusting) issue too! Wore braces 3 times (7 years total in braces) as an adult and just got them off Just over a year ago. When I was trying to resolve my tongue placement problem I used a mouth guard made by “Myobrace”. It was basically a mouth trainer that was mostly design for kids but had sizes for adults too and it has a little tab on the guard where you are to place your tongue on and the added benefit is it prevents you from mouth breathing without the need to tape your lips. It works for me when I wear it and I probably should be wearing it all the time still in my sleep but having a full face mask plus all the other stuff on my head that I’d rather not use the myobrace trainer until I am comfortable adding my gear to my face.
Very well made but pricey. About $180 CAD.
Re: Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard
@CPAPSTEVE
I looked at the "myobrace" and I really like it. I was not expecting at all the extra benefit of the retainer with CPAP. I use a dreamwear nasal cushion and I wasn't having *too* much trouble keeping my mouth closed ... but I was have "some" trouble. I did have large leaks.
I did buy a cervical collar which I could not make myself wear. I did try taping and also some crazy gel style "lip plumpers" that are kinda like tape.
I almost forgot about that stage because as soon as I got the retainers that little bit of "grip" and was all I needed. It feels GOOD to be able to bite down hard on it from time to time and just relax the jaw and it does help hold my mouth in the best CPAP position. It's so minor but now I am uncomfortable if I just nap with CPAP on and I will always get back up and put the retainers in because they just opens my airway that tiny bit and with the CPAP pressure I just breath so amazing and sleep so deep.
I love the dreamwear. I slip it on and off like a catchers mitt. I love that I never see or feel the hose.
Maybe you could get off the fullface mask and in to something more comfortable with the addition of "myobrace" and get that extra orthodontic benefit as well?
It never ceases to amaze me when I find little tweaks in life that make such huge improvements.

Re: Dumb Question. Can you swallow or choke on a mouth guard
Yes, I am trying to solve the dry mouth. I have tried all kinds of things. Even taped, my mouth gets bone dry. I find, as I get older, I am getting pretty good at choking on my own spit. I figured if I can do that, I can have a party with a boil and bite. Sigh.
