need suggestions for fragrance free soap to wash equipment

Post by LG34 » Mon Aug 27, 2018 8:26 am

My instructions for the equipment were to wash the tub, tubing, nasal pillow, and headgear on a weekly basis with mild soap or baby shampoo. (And to wash the nasal pillow daily). I have been using Burt's Bees fragrance free baby shampoo and wash. Target carried the shampoo but yesterday they had quit selling it in the store. I went to several grocery stores and drug stores and Walmart and couldn't find it. Had to order online which is not convenient.

Can anyone recommend some other soap to use? I can't handle scented - even some of the baby shampoos that say light scent are too much. Also my hands react (contact dermatitis) to all dish washing soap and to liquid hand soaps. I use a fragrance free glycerin liquid hand soap (Clearly Natural) but thinking the glycerin may not be good for the equipment?

Dawn and Ivory both leave a fragrance. My late brother also had problems with fragrances and contact dermatitis. Orvus paste worked great for him. Originally designed for horses, quilters use this as well. You can buy a 120 oz. container, which for your purposes would be a lifetime supply since it is concentrated, from Amazon. I do not recommend the smaller containers sold as Quilt soap. Just buy the big container once and put some in a small tupperware or similar container for regular use. If you want something more liquid like, go to any horse-supply store and buy horse shampoo. Horses are very sensitive to chemicals, so they work well for your needs.

If you would like a small amount of Orvus to try out, send me a PM with your address.

Tub - If you use distilled water, it almost never needs cleaning.
Tubing - I use them for years without cleaning.
Nasal pillow daily - I wash once per week.
Headgear - Rarely washed.

Dr Bronners unscented baby liquid soap. Dr Bronners Sal suds may be ok, but it does have a little scent.

I buy at my local natural food market, but target and Cvs carries it too- in the natural cosmetics section. Target also sells travel sizes, but I don’t know about unscented in that size.

Dr. Broenner's, Burt's Bees - people are falling for the marketing and getting ripped off with high prices.

Read the ingredient list and buy the cheap stuff - it's just as good and just as safe, sometimes safer. Use your critical thinking skills.

I’m not familiar with Burt’s Bees, but a qt of Bronners will last a lifetime.
I use about 1/4 teaspoon in a sink of warm water to wash my pap things. For washing my body, about 1/2 teaspoon total. Their flip top lets out too much soap at once. I put it in a repurposed lotion bottle (that dispensed a lotion based fragrance) that gives about 1/8 teaspoon per pump.

Natural food markets are the place to look for the good stuff.
Granny, I repackage practically everything, as most products are packed in wasteful containers.
Marketing, meh.

Natural food markets
I've been in these many times and walked out almost every time without buying anything. Ripoffs.

Eat vegetables, a small amount of fruit, lean meats, eggs, .... I can get all of these at good prices at many grocery stores.

EWG.org is a website where you can lok up the ingredients for over 2,000 household cleaning products. They rate the products A to F. A being the least harmful i.e. best, with F being the most harmful. They list all the ingredients and outline any environmental and/or health concerns.

EWG.org
The Environmental Working Group is one of the most dishonest, malignant organizations short of terrorist groups. They are almost totally lacking in scientific credibility.
Dirty dozen
Critics of the list have suggested that it significantly overstates the risk to consumers of the listed items, and that the methodology employed in constructing the list "lacks scientific credibility".[14]

The list continues to be criticized as scare tactics and a 2011 study showed that all of the items on the list have safe levels of chemical residue or none at all.[15][14]

A 2011 analysis of the USDA's PDP data[16] by Steve Savage found that 99.33% of the detectable residues were below the EPA tolerance and fully 1/2 of the samples were more than 100 times below.[17]

Skin deep
This database has had criticism directed towards it for having questionable validity and reliability; accusations of synthesis of information; and the classification of the compound polyparaben, which some allege does not exist.`[18]

Sunscreen
Industry representatives called the 2008 sunscreen report inaccurate.[4] Personal Care Products Council general counsel Farah Ahmed said, "It is very clear to me that they have a very low level of understanding of the way sunscreens work and the way they are regulated by the FDA and tested by the industry." She expressed further concern, "I would hate to think that there are parents out there not using sunscreen on their kids because of a report like this that is not based on real science." Representatives from Schering-Plough (Coppertone), Johnson & Johnson (Neutrogena), and Sun Pharmaceuticals Corp. (Banana Boat) also reiterated their products' safety and efficacy.[19]

Commenting on the 2010 sunscreen report, Dr. Zoe Draelos, of Duke University and spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology, said the group made unfair "sweeping generalizations" in its report and their recommendations were based on "very old technology."[20]

You don't say what post you are referring to. But, if you are referring to the Wikipedia article, everything in it is cited and the citations are from legitimate sources. Check some of them out sometime.
