Can your wear a mouth guard while using a CPAP

First off I feel like I am falling apart. Second I am a newbie but did read the new user post and filled out my profile correctly I believe.

I recently went to the dentist, fist time in a long time. Was told I grind my teeth pretty bad. Did not know this but take his word on it. He said I need a mouth guard. I said I use a CPAP convo sort of ended. I also have had unexplained ear ringing in one ear and now have some jaw pain. Started doing a lil research and seems like the grinding could be causing the ear ringing. I'm no doctor but the ENT the other day said to me deal with it. Think I might still try to figure it out.

So my question is does anyone else use a mouth guard while using a CPAP? I would like to try it. My equipment is not new either. I think it is not helping me either. May switch to a nose and mouth mask. I have been waking up with a sore throat and dry mouth. It is all frustrating.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Really trying to figure this all out. I have made a lot of changes in my life to be more healthy, lower blood sugars and lower blood pressure. But those changes don't help that much my equip isn't working right at night.

There may be to many questions in this post, I am fine with addressing just one. Please advise on how it should be done, again I am a newbie. Thanks so much

Yes, some people do wear mouth guards.

Yes. I actually wear two. On my bottom teeth I wear an Invisalign retainer and on my upper teeth I wear a bite guard. Both were fitted by my dentist.

I use a nasal pillow mask and do fine.

I recently started wearing my orthodontic tongue training appliance which is really just a fancy soft silicone mouth guard with a tongue placement tab on it. I wear a full face mask and I have had no issues. In fact the reason why I started wearing my tongue trainer again is so that I am forced to keep my mouth closed so it doesn’t dry out in the middle of the night. It is a bit awkward feeling but time will make it become 2nd nature.

I mouth breathe as well, which sounds like why you are having dry mouth / sore throat/ When I tape my mouth my dry mouth / sore throat pretty much disappears.

Wearing a grind guard does not interfere with CPAP/APAP use. Try to get one that is fitted by your dentist. I use one with my APAP machine and they don't affect each other at all.

I recommend a cheap mouth guard to start with. Some people have their bruxism resolve with effective CPAP use. When they were having apneas, during the struggle to breathe, they would reflexively gnash their teeth. This habit was broken when the apneas were prevented by CPAP.

If you have followup questions about mouth guards, please use this thread.

Regarding your overall CPAP therapy, it may take some time to get it optimized. For help with this, I recommend starting a new thread and sticking to the one thread. This gives those helping you the chance to see all the history in one thread.

BTW, it's common to need some tweaking of machine settings and masks to get a good therapy. Your medical professionals only had one night in a strange environment to titrate your machine settings. This was very different conditions from what you experience at home in your own bed over many nights.

I also have a dentist provided (custom-molded) guard for my lower teeth. I wear a nasal mask and there is no interference. Unlike you, I was not having any immediate issues that required intervention but my husband has cracked a couple of teeth and had to get root canals / crowns. Our insurance paid for the guard but only pays half for the root canals / crowns so it seemed like a good prevention. However, I really hate it and usually end up ripping it out at some point during the night.

I had some continued grinding issues, and honestly it resolved with effective therapy once I finally gave in and consistently taped my mouth with a tape that stuck enough so it wouldn't leak. I'm not saying that will be true for you, but as others have eluded to there may be the chance of another resolution if you get the CPAP therapy working well. IE if you're having dry mouth there's a good chance of mouth breathing or mouth leak etc. and I did try mouth guards as well. the amount of excessive drool was just too much for me, and honestly they made my teeth hurt more. Of course YMMV, I don't want to discourage you if a mouth guard is the best answer... I just know it wasn't for me, but I have heard other people consistently using mouth guards.

HI Eric! Yes, you can wear a teeth guard along with CPAP. Grinding, clenching also causes ear ringing, painful jaw muscles and TMJ symtoms like frontal headaches, neck pain and even shoulder pain. Notice my avatar and you'll see I am a serious destructive clencher. CPAP has not helped the clenching as yet (almost 2 months now) and I was just fitted for yet ANOTHER mouth piece called an NTI. Looks like braces will be my only permanent solution. What a face I'll be at 69 yrs old with braces on my teeth and CPAP on my nose!

I would strongly suggest a custom mouthguard to protect your teeth....and there's an online place where you can get one for half the cost of your dentist office. I wasted money on several OTC guards. Check it out: www.teethnightguard.com. I have no stock in the company...just 3 of their guards!!

At this time I would like to point out that there are schools of dentistry all over the country,
where patients of limited means may often find affordable care.
Locate one in your area, and contact them for information.
They often have access to the newest techniques and equipment.
Dental health can impact many other aspects of our health.
Be good to your choppers, and they will be good to you.
