ResMed P10 pillow sizing
ResMed P10 pillow sizing
Okay, so several days ago I was on the hunt for complete P10 mask and pillows for my friend that unfortunately couldn't afford to replace her entire getup b/c it was super worn out and chewed up by her cat.
Well today I was lucky enough to find not 1 but 2 complete P10's for a very good price. I bought my friend a set and I opted to get one for myself to try out.
Although i am a male the seller only had the "for her" version which I think is fundamentally the same as the "blue" version.
That being said, how do I size the pillows properly for my nose? I suspect that I am a size medium but they feel a bit big but when I try the small the wide part of the pillow almost seems a hair small.
What is the proper way to select the right sized pillow?
Thanks!

Whatever feels best.
There are four pillow sizes,
"regular": small, medium, large
"for her" xsmall, small, medium.
There's only one frame, so all four pillows fit, just different ones come with the kit... and a different strap, shorter in pink.

The pink is shorter than the blue by around half to 3/4 of an inch.

Re: ResMed P10 pillow sizing
I am lying here in bed wearing the P10 as I type this response out and I can’t even really tell that I am wearing anything! NEVER in my mind did I think I could use a nasal pillow because a nasal mask for me was terrible. I can see why the P10 is so popular. Will be interesting to see if I get mouth leak tonight or not. If I don’t then I think I may have found my new favorite

Be sure to let us know how it goes. I've thought about giving these a try at some point - pretty sure I'd need a large C-clamp to keep my mouth shut though.CPAPSteve wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 11:48 pmI am lying here in bed wearing the P10 as I type this response out and I can’t even really tell that I am wearing anything! Post the chart too. I've read that you may see a significant drop in pressure requirements

There is a difference in the spacing of the centerline of the parts that fit into your nose. Look into a mirror while holding the different sizes up to your nostrils and see which matches the spacing the best. That is where to start.

Re: ResMed P10 pillow sizing
Chart for Friday September 21 I use my usual mask - ResMed AirTouch 20 FFM
Chart from Saturday September 22 was mostly using the P10 nasal pillows. There are two breaks in my chart.
At around 1:45ish AM. I was in light sleep but woke up to go to the bathroom and I opted to take a sleeping pill (restoril 10mg) because I felt that I was concentrating too hard to keeping my tongue in the right spot and keeping the back door in my throat closed. I was sleeping because I caught myself leaking air out of my throat a couple of times in my sleep that aroused me but I know I feel back asleep.
At around 7:15AM I was starting to wake and I thought it was because of the P10 pillows and not being used to them. I went to the bathroom again and swapped back to my trusty AirTouch 20 FFM. I think I made the switch b/c I may have subconsciously felt that I was not sleeping as good with the pillows because my face "misses" the feeling of the FFM. After being strapped in the FFM for about 3 months every night that changing things up seemed foreign to me.
Looking at the pressure charts it is CLEAR to me that the pillows operate at a lower pressure. With the FFM I run my 95% pressures at or below 13-14cms but with my first night with pillows the 95% pressure didn't break 10.34.
P10 advantages:
1. Minimialist
2. Quiet
3. Comfy
4. Inexpensive (buying from the local classified save me (and my friend) HUGE money.
5. Comes with multiple pillow sizes that fit my nose perfectly.
6. Zero leaks which means lower treatment pressures. I was surprised that I didn't crack 11 cms of pressure all night long.
P10 cons
1. You have to be able to close the back door on your throat otherwise you will be VERY uncomfortable and your CPAP is rendered ineffective.
2. Leaks could be resolved by wearing a chinstrap or taping. If I have to go to that trouble of wearing more stuff than I would rather wear my FFM as I'm used to it and it's very comfortable (and comforting) to wear.
3. Cleaning isn't a simple matter of wiping things down. My believe is that one should be taking the pillow off the mask and washing under running water with soap daily. FFM you don't have to do that.
4. Wasteful. Every time you buy a P10 it comes with 3 cushions. I can't imagine how many people just toss the other 2 cushions they don't use which is very wasteful. I don't have any data to support my statement but I'm sure many people don't think twice and throw out what they don't use.
Conclusion:
Would I continue with the P10's? absolutely! It is insanely comfy and it literally feels like you're wearing nothing at all. Wife makes fun of me that I have a cute purple strap but honestly I think the smaller "for her" size fits my head good! It doesn't feel like the straps are being overstretched so when I have to replace the straps I will get the for him version to see if it is too loose. I'm a size medium pillow so the "for him" or "for her" version would do me just fine. Would I ever give up my AirTouch F20? Nope - probably because I'm so used to wearing it that I "miss" wearing it and that was why I woke at 7:15AM to switch the mask to the FFM. It is just a matter of getting accustomed to a new mask but the F20 has the advantage that I can be lazy and opt to relax my throat's back door or just breath through my mouth as needed without worrying about being roused by leaks.
Hope that helps!

Re: ResMed P10 pillow sizing
Thanks for all the details.
Looks to me like you were very successful with the pillows. Especially considering this was the first try.

Re: ResMed P10 pillow sizing
Successful in that I didn’t get the crazy leaks from my mouth like I first did with a Resmed N20 nasal mask when I started therapy. It was my RT that suggested using a nasal pillow and subsequently Pugsy had suggested that as well in one of her posts. Since I was on the hunt for a P10 for my friend that I lucked out and found a second one for cheap so I really had nothing to lose. I suspect I will use the P10 on and off as my sinuses act up at night and some days I have a clear nose and other nights I am blocked shut. That being said, the P10 is awesome and the “for her” fits my head size perfectly just a bit of stretch so I know the straps aren’t being overstretched at all.
I am sure some of my successes with the P10 are also attributed to being accustomed to CPAP therapy and regularly using my tongue training appliance issues to me by an orthodontist.
Like I said in my previous post, I do like my F20 memory foam FFM and not wearing last night felt super weird like I was missing something. I will continue to use the P10 just so I get used to using it. The P10 makes an awesome travel mask because it is so compact.
