New Resmed S10 Elite vs hired S10 autoset

Post by validus » Tue Oct 09, 2018 11:51 pm

Hello all been lurking around for a few weeks and had most of my questions answered by just reading posts but I now have a question I have not yet seen answered. I was diagnosed with OSA a couple of months ago. I had a untreated AHI of around 55. with blood O2 saturation getting as low as 69%. So I was very happy to get on CPAP therapy. For the first month as a trial I was given a ResMed S10 autoset with a N20 mask. This mostly worked well for me, at first I had a lot of mouth leaks but then I got a chin strap and this helped alot. I adapted well to sleeping with the machine. I even enjoy sleeping with some moving warm humidified air flowing.

After getting the chin strap my LL percentage way around 12 to 15% and my AHI was about 1.5 with a few CA happening just after falling asleep then a few H or the occasional CA overnight. Nothing that seems to concerning I was rather happy with this. Even tho I had the Autoset at my sleep doc advice I had it set to CPAP mode pressure of 10 with EPR set to 3 and auto ramp set, again all good. At the end of the month when it came time to buy my own machine I opted to get an S10 Elite as I was fine with CPAP mode and in Australia there is no real medicare coverage so I am paying out of pocket I will save the few hundred difference. I noticed there are some differences between my new elite and the rented auto set even tho I have the same settings on both and the same type of mask.

On my new machine I am seeing AHI numbers of around 0.4 to 0.5 often with just one CA int he beginning of the night and maybe one or two H over night. Also my LL rate is close to 0% all other graphs look about the same. I am happy with this of course but I am concerned that it is not correct why would basically the same setup be different results? Also the new Manichean make a very almost sub audible noise like a very slight werring when inhale. It really is not annoying me but I don't recall the autoset making that noise but it is so slight it may have been there and I did not pay attention.

So my questions for the experts on this forum, is there a reason a new elite with the same setting as a rented autoset would have different results? And is a very slight noise normal on inhale?

Thanks so much!

s10 autoset, set to cpap is s10 autoset set to cpap. s10 elite cpap is a s10 elite cpap. although in theory they are the same i would not expect them to be the same.

I guess I understand that they are different models and could be very slightly different in the way they work. But is it really that the elite would have notable differences in therapy results like that.

Like I said if it is true I am of course happy that it doing better. I just really worry it has a faulty sensor or something and it is missing some events.

Also last night my wife also said she heard it was making more noise then the rented autoset.

You may be overthinking this. How long is the warranty on your new machine? If it is a year or more, I would just be happy with the results. Is it safe to assume the new machine is not so much louder that it bothers your wife's sleep?

fair enough, I will not over think the results. But am a little disappointed about the extra sound, my wife said it was a little annoying last night. If this is really a more noisy machine maybe it is worth seeing if they will take it back and sell me the autoset to get my more quiet experience back.

Talk to wherever you got the Elite...it shouldn't be any louder than the AutoSet was and if your wife can hear it then something is off.

Ok thanks for the feed back I will talk to the store that sold the machine to me about the sound, and not really worry about the change in leak rate and AHI. Thanks every one!!

Leak rate and AHI will vary no matter what machine. We don't sleep the same each night.
Even after over 9 years of therapy I will still sometimes see some rather wide variations in all my numbers.
What would unusual is to not see a variation in the numbers.
So that part of it isn't unusual but these machines should be essentially silent especially to the spouse. If the spouse can hear the machine then something unusual is going on.

Just a quick update since I always like to see a conclusion to threads when I read a forum. I went back to the place that sold me the S10 Elite and they were happy to call it an out of box failure related to the werring sound and gave me a new one. This new one is just as quiet as the Autoset I had rented, And every one was right my numbers kind of came back to my "normal" range AHI around 1.0 - 1.5, so I guess just normal day to day variation.

Thanks every one!
