Ozone Cleaning

Post by FredF1 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 1:56 pm

I took a square plastic Tupperware container cut a whole in one side. I place my mask and hose through the hole I cut wrapped with paper towel to seal it and snap the lid shut. I bought a N1668 Ozone Disinfector from Amazon for 52.00. I use it every morning after I wake up for 5 minutes. It makes my mask, machine and water tank smell fresh and clean. I didn't pay $300.00 plus dollars for a So Clean. Plus mine cleans vegetables, fruit and oxygenates and disinfects water also.

Hopefully whatever parts you "clean" with the ozone don't deteriorate to the point of not being usable. Ozone is a very caustic gas and will break down and discolor plastics and silicone. Most likely the clean smell you are finding is the ozone gas which is harmful to your lungs.
Good luck with it.

My use of ozone is limited to the rare instance that I need to squirt Ozium
onto a cotton ball and seal it up with something stinky.

NONE OF THE PLASTICS IN THE RESMED OR THE MASK ARE DAMAGEABLE BY OZONE CLEANING. NO MORE THAN THE SO CLEAN! IT DID'NT COST 300.00 PLUS DOLLARS. SOUNDS LIKE A SALESMAN FOR SO CLEAN WITH ALL THE WARNINGS. I ALSO LEAVE THE ROOM WHILE ITS CLEANING. THE OZONE BECOMES HARMLESS AFTER 5 MINUTES IT CONVERTS TO OXYGEN.

Whatever... I'm sure that your 'message' gets across better in all caps.

However, your title is misleading, since ozone won't clean anything. It removes no dirt, no soil, no grease, no oils.

Whether or not your machine makes enough ozone to kill anything or not is another matter. Also, unless you're blowing it through the hose, it's unlikely that it will diffuse adequately through a 6 foot+ hose.

You clearly misunderstood. There is no way I would ever suggest anyone pay good money for a Soclean machine. It's completely unnecessary. Any and all cleaning that needs to be done to your CPAP equipment can be done with soap and water. It reportedly would take a much higher concentration of the gas for a longer period of time to effectively disinfect these items. Otherwise hospitals would be using $300 SoClean machines instead of the much more expensive methods in use.

I'm guessing you've done your research on the highly corrosive gas, ozone. While it does dissapate, if you still smell it, you may irritating your lungs. There have been people take apart CPAP machines after using the "ozone sanitizing process" to find discolored and warped gaskets and impeller blades. Same goes for the masks and cushions.

The point is, this "sanitation process" is unnecessary. But if you feel better taking these risks, then by all means knock yourself out.

You know that, how, exactly? Especially given that ozone is not one of the validated disinfection methods in ResMed's reprocessing guides. Disinfection for Resmed includes liquid chemical disinfectant, time/temperature disinfection, and low-temperature, hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilization.

You hurt the credibility of your claims by calling ozone disinfection "cleaning". It is not cleaning. Exposure to ozone doesn't remove anything from your mask or accessories. What you are doing may work to kill some pathogens, but if you over state, or mis-state, what ozone does you are going to get a valid pushback on such claims.

I'm sorry about the caps. I am blind sometimes my mind doesn't register if its in caps or not. I'll try and be more observant in the future.

Not this time. You made a post on a forum, and you learned from doing that. And so did I. And so, hopefully, will a lot of other people. So you are so smart sometimes, too!

Said another way, Thank you very much for your original post, since it provided opportunity for several others to share their specialized knowledge on the matter, which I learned from.

Ozone can be a useful tool. It can also, as is the case with all tools, be dangerous in the wrong circumstances or when used improperly. Some lungs are more sensitive to irritation from low-level ozone than other lungs are. But this statement from the EPA about outdoor ozone pollution gives me pause:
The EPA dudes wrote:Recent studies consistently report associations between short-term ozone exposures and total non-accidental mortality, which includes deaths from respiratory causes. Studies suggest that long-term exposure to ozone also may increase the risk of death from respiratory causes, but the evidence is not as strong as the evidence for short-term exposure.-- https://www.epa.gov/ozone-pollution/hea ... -pollution
