Is distilled water ok to use if previously frozen??

Post by Jerseyguy » Wed Oct 31, 2018 2:51 am

Have an extra bottle of distilled water in my garage and the temperature is dropping now into the low 30s upper 20s. Just wondering if it's ok to use in a CPAP machine after it gets warmed up back to room temperature?

I recon so... I wouldn't have a problem with it. If you have reservations, throw it away and get a new one.

Sure. The reason to use distilled water is to avoid minerals that may be present in tap and bottled water. The minerals could cause scale in your humidifier tank. Still, scale is not a big problem because it can be easily cleaned with vinegar solution.

Water doesn't become impure just because it is frozen and then thawed, unless the container it is in leaks something into it in the process: it's still the same water it ever was.

There is no issue with the water, as long as the bottle is intact.

However, it's not a good idea to let this happen as the bottle can be ruptured or shattered by the ice.

Freezing water doesn't magically cause it to get minerals in it... and that's the only reason to use distilled water... so that you don't end up with minerals in the water tank.

I just use tap water and rinse out the tank when needed.. and soak it with vinegar now and then if there's a mineral buildup.

The water does not change--unless the jug is ruptured.
I have used DW that had spent a previous winter in an unheated camper in Wyoming.
I left the jug in the sink--just in case.
This winter, there will be even more headspace for expansion.
The jug is also protected from sunlight. (Which weakens plastic)

I had a jug of distilled water freeze solid, but the jug did not crack. When it thawed, I sent a sample to a water-testing lab. The results came back - it contained a high level of dihydrogen monoxide. I dumped the whole jug down the drain because too much dihydrogen monoxide in your lungs can kill you.

I looked all over the jug for instructions, nowhere did I find did it to have a label, "Thaw before use". It must have became unglued due to freezing. Jim

Also missing was the list of ingredients, and the hazmat warnings.

The main thing I would be cautious about is storing any water in a garage where volatile chemicals such as gasoline or paint thinner may be stored. The plastic bottle may seem impervious but it's relatively permeable to VOC gases, and VOCs can be harmful in dilute quantities.

Another "technically correct" statement.

Ok, distilled water is not that expensive and I do have painters in the house so I will just get another one. I also have to try to keep the my machine in another room while they are painting in there. I have anxiety issues perhaps they have something to do with the sleep apnea and maybe they don't. Between getting my diagnosis and getting my CPAP, I would ask God not to kill me every night. Sufficed to say I'm a bit of a wreck but I'm hoping that my sleep apnea gets better and makes my life less complicated. Though it's been a year now so I dunno guess I need a new sleep doc. His bedside manner leaves something to be desired so perhaps I need another one anyway
