I will assume you have read this...posts #2 and 3 if you haven't. Discusses pretty much all the options available for condensation/rain out control.

I started cpap therapy over 9 years ago. There were no heated hoses except for a very expensive stand alone Aussie heated hose.
You think $40 is high price...try nearly 4 times that 40 bucks for the Aussie hose.
I refused to pay that for a hose so I got real adept at using hose covers to prevent condensation.
Hose covers/cozies can work depending on your humidity setting you prefer (I need all I can get to keep my nose happy) and your preferred bedroom ambient temperature.
The main down side to the hose cozy....they add weight to the hose which translates into weight on the mask and if your mask is barely secured because of minimal headgear (like my P10)...the weight can pull the mask off the face sometimes.
When the integrated hoses were finally available from Respironics and ResMed....made my winter cpap therapy much easier and more comfortable and also allowed for more consistent humidity delivery.
I use a heated hose year round...turn down the temp in the spring and summer when warmer isn't needed and doesn't feel so great and higher in the late fall and winter when it is needed to prevent condensation and even prevent ice cube nose syndrome (nose hurts because it gets cold and the hurting wakes you up).
As far as how long of a life for a heated hose....I had one that went through 3 different S9 machines...had over 10,000 hours of use on it most likely. With some common sense care they will last for years. Currently have 16 months on this recent hose...changed from the S9 to the AirSense 10 in Aug of 2017 so had to retire the S9 hose since it wouldn't fit on the AirSense. I use it year round.
Oh...hose cozy won't help much for the condensation in the mask sometimes caused by the moisture in our own exhaled breaths.
The air just cools down too much too fast (depends on room temp) to stay warm enough to prevent condensation in the mask itself.
Sometimes even the heated hose comes up short depending on how cold the room is and sometimes there is a big difference in prevention of condensation with just 1 degree warmer in that mask.
So coming from someone who has used both the hose cozy and the heated hose....heated hose wins hands down for me.
I may have to RISE but I refuse to SHINE.
