Oral devices and gag reflex

Post by tyrone747 » Thu May 09, 2019 10:32 am

I'm curious about trying an oral device to treat my mild sleep apnea since the CPAP is sometimes disturbing. I bought a cheapo boil and bite device from Amazon to try and I feel like gagging right away. My questions are; does this go away over time, and do more professional devices reduce the gag reflex due to their design?

The gag reflex is a contraction of the back of the throat triggered by an object touching the roof of your mouth, the back of your tongue, the area around your tonsils, or the back of your throat.
A properly fitted device should touch none of the areas mentioned.

I have not experienced that at all with my oral appliance. I got mine via a sleep dentist and it was custom made. They did give me a cheap one to use before I got my real one and I found it completely useless. I am not sure what is causing your gag reflex but a good sleep dentist should be able to help you decide if a custom appliance will work.

Trimming the OTC bite guards to remove excess material can reduce gagging.
Mouths come in all different sizes.
Trim carefully, a little at a time, and round any new edges.
It is not rocket science.
