Best soaps to use when cleaning hose and mask?

Post by SgtSkippy » Mon Jun 03, 2019 4:35 pm

I used vinegar and water once to clean my heated hose and greatly regretted that. The vinegar smell didn't go away for days! Definitely not doing that again. Since then, I've just been using hot water to clean my various parts. I wanted to try using a gentle soap, but which one would be best? Did some research and found a few posts from 9 years ago saying Johnson baby shampoo or Ivory dish soap work well. Are those still the recommended soaps to use?

Edit: Also saw a few people suggesting Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castle Liquid Soap. Is that a good choice too? That one is fairly cheap on Amazon.

Those along with Dawn dish soap were the ones recommended by my DME.

I've used an unscented handsoap from Walmart for years. Soap (mainly sodium lauryl sulfate) foams and allow oils and biofilms to be rinsed down the drain. The rest is personal preference.

Grease removal is essential.
Any cleaner containing a "conditioner" will leave an oily residue. --bad.
Dawn is well tolerated by me--so I use that.
Dish detergents are better than hand or face soaps, because of oils in the latter.
Baby shampoo is for babies--but your safety and comfort outweigh the longevity of equipment.
Use the most effective product which will not harm YOU.
Your skin and lungs are of primary importance.

I use a dish soap that is unscented and hypoallergenic, because my skin will use any excuse to act up.

I used Dawn Direct Foam for quite a while and loved it.

I currently use Lavender scented Johnson's Baby Shampoo and am very pleased with it. Love the smell.

I use J&J Baby Shampoo/soap
In the regular formula of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo it lists dihydrogen monoxide, cocamidopropyl betaine, PEG-80 sorbitan laurate and sodium trideceth sulfate. Citric acid, PEG-150 distearate, polyquaternium-10, fragrance and tetrasodium EDTA are also ingredients. The last three ingredients are quaternium-15, yellow 10 and orange 4.

Sounds like nasty stuff indeed.. those sodium sulfates are skin irritants.
