auto PAP machine - timings off when breathing out

Post by Surreall » Fri Jul 05, 2019 5:42 am

HI all

First time poster here - Hi!!!

I have a Reswell RVC820A Auto CPAP , with heated humidifeir and f30 mask.

The main problem i am getting, is that on the ramp up it goes out of sync with my breathing pretty quick. And ends up blowing air when i am trying to blow out. This is usually after I have relaxed a bit and on the verge of sleeping. Once it goes out of sync it mostly stays out of sync.

I have lowest set at 7 and highest at 14. And the relax in between set at 2 (i hope that makes sense to people)

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. the seal is good (unless i don't shave! Because of this i am now two showers a day - hehe)

Welcome to the cpaptalk forums! When I first started using CPAP, I experienced this, too - however, this isn't how CPAP actually works. In other words, it was just me getting used to the fact that air is always coming in - even when I'm breathing out. I'm not familiar with this brand of machine. The way it should work is the machine notices that you are starting to breathe out and reduces the pressure - there is a very slight delay in this process and that is probably what you are noticing when you are half asleep. Then when you finish breathing out and begin to breathe in the machine increases the pressure. The machine isn't "synching" with your breathing pattern or trying to change your breathing pattern - it is responding to each individual breath. Once I realized this (with the help of people on this board), my perception of the "out of synch" changed and it felt natural. Some machines allow you to adjust how rapidly the pressure changes when it notices the onset of breathing in or breathing out - I'm not sure if yours does or not.

Note that there are machines that do try to force your breathing to synch with the machine - those are ASV machines and are not what you have.

Since you are using a machine designed for the UK, you will not find many users on this board. In looking at the specifications for the machine it says nothing about your "in between" number. I think it's most likely an exhale relief. I would go back to whoever set you up on the unit.

This machine does not appear to be widely available in the US.

Note that in general the only physical difference between a US CPAP and a UK CPAP is the plug that goes into the wall. Most (all?) CPAPs are dual voltage and can work in any county with the correct adapter.

Plus the fact that many of the machines sold in England are European designed and not readily available for sale here in the US.

I've never heard of that model, I wonder if they copied the weird respironics "relief" method which raises pressure a little at the end of exhalation. This very often confused people into thinking the machine is trying to rush their breathing (it's not, it's just getting ready for the next breath.)

Things to try... Either ignore it, or extend your ramp time, or turn off the "relief" setting

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I understand why most would think it is just an initial pressure. But for me, when i am relaxed, it goes into full pressure mode on my exhale and reduced pressure on my inhale, not just at the beginning but a full reversal.

Maybe i breathe irregularly.

Yes i think it is the pressure release option that is set at 2. I have just realised I bought a new mask recently and haven't done the new mask set up with it. So will do that tonight, and see if there's a difference.

Either you're quite mistaken, or your machine is broken.

Get, or build, a manometer, and find out.

I experienced this too, for the first few days--just breathe normally.
Let it know you are the boss.
On an APAP, the machine follows you--it does not lead you.
It is programmed to do exactly what you need it to do.
A small fan may provide enough white noise to help you deal with the sound changes.
It is quite pleasant, once you get used to it.
