Hives from cpap?

Post by Hivesman » Fri Aug 09, 2019 1:16 pm

Has anyone developed a hives problem from their cpap? I've been using it for years without a problem but I just recently broke out in hives. I couldn't figure out where they came from except that they were worst when I got up in the morning, disappeared over the course of the day, and then returned the next night. Having ruled lots of other things out, I tried not using my cpap one night and I didn't get them. Have any of you experienced this? It's a probably a matter of cleaning my tubing better but I already use both vinegar and soap. What should I do instead?

as always, i would suggest in this case seeing a doctor for a recommendation to a dermatologist, just to rule anything out.

you might want to try a mask liner to act as a barrier between mask and skin.

i don't remember anyone recently coming here with this problem. doesn't mean you won't hear from them now, of course.

good luck!

To the OP:

Where are the hives? Are they at the point of contact? Are they inside the nostrils? Are they near the point of contact (but not at the actual site of contact)? Are they in some other place?

I noticed several reports of hives of this forum. I don't really remember this before, and I've been around for a while. Perhaps there's a bad batch of hoses, masks or machines out there!

There has not been a rash of hive posts* and there is no bad batch of CPAP machines or accessories.

I'd wait a bit before informing the CDC.

The problem with hives is that can be from direct contact, breathing, or ingestion. They can appear where the topical exposure was or elsewhere on the body. And we really don't know where they are showing up. And I am also assuming there hasn't been a water spill at some point into the unit.

First, is everything truly identical between your cpap and non-cpap nights? You use the same pillows. Same sheets. Same a/c or fan use. Pets stay or don't stay the same as cpap nights. You don't change any face washing or tooth brushing habits? You ate the same things as the other days/nights. You didn't omit some activity that one day/night you skipped the cpap (i.e., tinkering in the garage, etc.) that you typically do?

Second, I follow the old change what you can approach. Clean the area around your CPAP. Clean the seals around the tank. Still an issue?

It is always good to have some spare parts in case something breaks. Swap out the filter, hose, and humidifier tank. Still an issue? Swap out the mask cushion.

Might not be hives, might be a reaction to the soap or vinegar residue(s) or whatever you wash your face with. I wash plastic and silicone mark parts with Dawn, rinse, spray with 100% while vinegar, let sit a min or two, then rinse very, very well to get rid of the scent and any residue. I must wash face to remove any facial oils or I won't get a good seal. In my case, I would have 3 thing to check: Dawn, vinegar, facial wash. Check out what you are using.

I just started using my cpap, first night woke up itching like mad, hives all down my body.

I orginally thought it was just some reaction to fall. Took my Benadryl...next night same issue, last night was so bad, face down to my toes covered in hives.

I am off to my doctor's to discuss this issue.

The thing I would be concerned about is an allergy to silicone or a cleaning agent. I would make certain I connected with a md prior to resuming use.
