Philips Respironics System One heater not heating up, stone cold

Post by spamgirl » Sat Oct 19, 2019 9:24 am

Hi all,

I noticed 3 nights ago my water was full in the morning. It's been the same every day since. This morning when I woke up I popped out the humidifier and felt the heater and it was frigid. The humidifier setting is 3 and worked until 3 nights ago. Is there some other troubleshooting I should try before calling Philips Respironics?

Thanks for your help!

Before calling ResMed, verify what machine you have.

Your profile and device name suggest you have a Philips Respironics, not a ResMed.

First thing to do is try the heater check at the beginning of use instead of at the end of the night.
Turn the machine on and set the humidity to as high as it will go and let it blow for about 20 minutes and then check the temperature of the bottom of the water chamber.
We know it should heat up at the beginning of the night. During the night the heater cycles on and off so the fact that it was cold in the morning could just mean it was in the off cycle. Don't know for sure until you verify at the beginning of use.

If it is indeed still stone cold after about 20 minutes or so....don't assume that the problem is in the humidifier section.
It might be a wiring/sensor problem in the blower unit that is causing the humidifier portion to not heat.

I tried that and it did not heat up at all. Is there anything else I could do to fix it? Thanks for your advice!

Bummer.

The is a known problem with the wiring in the System One machines (both 50 and 60 series) and IF (big IF) you are having the same problem there is a fix but it involves opening up the blower and doing some wiring repair and minor welding.

The entire machine can be sent off to acbio.com or similar place for repair but to be quite honest it is going to probably cost more than the machine is worth.

Respironics won't be able to tell you much except to "get with your equipment supplier"....it's going to be out of warranty anyway.

Let me go see if I can find the how to repair thread for when others had this problem.

Okay...here's the thread where they talked about fixing the heater problem on the 50 series machine and I believe same steps would be involved with the 60 series.

That is of course assuming that the burned out wire is the problem.

I do have a PR S1 60 series BiPap Auto model 760 already heated hose capable that I need to find a new home for.
Blower, humdifier, heated hose, water chamber, travel case...around 1500 hours or so.
$200....send me a PM if interested and I will explain the particulars.
It would very likely cost you that much or more to send it to acbio.com for repairs by the time you add in their fees and shipping.
If you already have a 60 series machine the parts should be interchangeable to help you figure out which part is the problem.

:( Thank you for your help! I'm in Canada so I'm probably going to look for something up here that I can get immediately. I appreciate the offer, though!

I popped it open and the wiring still looks good. Does that mean it's probably the heater instead?

If you can find someone who will let you try a different humidifier box to your existing blower you could see if it will heat up or not.
That will tell you if you can get by with just a new humidifier box or not.
It needs to be a 60 series match up though.
Can't try a 60 series blower with a 50 series humidifier.
The 60 series models have been discontinued for some years now and it may be hard to find someone who has some new humidifiers and they will just let you try one.
Hate to buy a new one and find out the problem is indeed in the blower somewhere.

Good news! It seems that popping it open made something work. That means I now have time to go to my dr, get a requisition, go do a sleep test, and then get the government to pay for a new one. :) Long live medicare for all LOL Thank you for your help!!

Unplug and replug in that connector a few times to make sure it's good and clean contact wise.
