What mask recommendation for those with mustache

Post by Viraj3474 » Mon Nov 18, 2019 1:48 pm

My friend’s husband and I both started CPAC therapy about the same time. His first mask was a ResMed AirFit 20 FF mask with an AirSense 10 Autoset and he did well with it. After his first three months, he decided he would like a little less bulk. And I added that he might like headgear that has the hose on the top of the head so he doesn’t have to deal with the restriction of a hose-nose. He tried a nasal mask (I don’t know which one) and said it just didn’t work for him. I was wondering if you mustached men have a mask that you would recommend? I will send him this link to track replies. Thanks much.

I have a mustache; both the Resmed N30i & Dreamwear nasal work for me.

I used to have a mustache (I shaved it off when I got tired of filtering my soup!). I still have a semi full beard, I shave my upper lip and just below the lower lip. I have been quite happy with a headgear and Nasal pillows, both with and without the mustache, no problems. I like the hose over the top of my head and down behind the headboard... I can roll around all I want and not get it tangled around me, the swivel connection keeps the hose unkinked if I roll over and over in the same direction. The nasal pillows were never interfered with by the mustache. I can see where a "mask" could leak if placed over a large clump of hair, such as a mustache. Even a full face mask could leak if placed over a full beard.

I was afraid the nasal pillows would tickle my nose by touching the nose hairs, but they don't at all.

I have the comfort gel nasal mask. I have a full beard and mustache. Facial hair appears to be a non-issue for me.

Viraj or VirajFriend, This was a change from FFM to nasal mask. Why didn't the nasal mask work? Was it because of the mustache? Or, was it due to mouthbreathing/leaking?

I've not had any leaking issues due to my mustache or beard with the Resmed-F10 or F30, the Dreamweaver FFM or my current mask, the SleepWeaver Elan. The Elan is a fabric(?) mask and it seems to conform the best so far. It also requires a lot less strap tightness to keep it sealed.

Here's the thing with masks: They are worse than shoes when it comes to "individual fit". What works wondrously for me may be an absolutely awful experience for you. The best advice I can offer is to find a vendor like CPAP.com who offers insurance for purchases that lets you try a mask and return it if it doesn't work for you. Then start trying different masks until you find one that works best for you.

I think I went through 6 masks in my first year. Each time I think I've found a "forever mask", I spot a different one that has a feature that appeals to me. The more masks you try, the more experience you gain which enables informed decisions. So even trying a mask that turns out to be horrible (for you) won't be a complete waste of time.
