N20 Mask modified

Post by Craigcc » Wed Nov 27, 2019 3:44 am

Just wanted to pass on this idea to anyone looking at masks. I spent a lot of time testing different cpap nasal masks and essentially found that the resmed n20 suited me the best. However the air stream out the front of the mask really annoyed my partner when it hit her in the face. Also every time I would sleep on my side or stomach the air stream would hit the pillow and make me think there was a leak.

Whereas i noticed on the Fisher and pykel eson mask there is a removable filter that sits on the front of the mask which also changes the air flow and acts like a bit of a muffler.

So, I got the filter from the eson mask and found it totally covered the holes on the exhaust from the n20 mask. I then cable tied it over the n20 mask and now it's the best mask ever. No more air stream and no more annoying my partner. And still works just as it did before. It is a bit fiddly to get it right, however once in place it does stay there.

I hope this helps someone trying to pick out their own mask - cheers

That's great if it doesn't kill you...blocking the exhaust means that the CO2 can't escape properly and you are re breathing it.

The ESON diffuser doesn't block the venting air flow....it just diffuses the direction of the air moving.
It is an optional feature on the ESON mask meaning using it must not really change much in terms of carbon dioxide ridding or it wouldn't be optional.
I see no reason why it wouldn't work with the N20 and be safe.
If it was causing a problem with rebreathing too much carbon dioxide you would have some headaches, feel like crap or be dead and not here to tell us about your adaptation.

There's blocking the air from venting as in with a material that isn't porous...and there is diffusing the air moving out the vent holes.
Diffusing doesn't equal blocking. Now using something like tape over the holes...that would be blocking.

Thanks Pugsy, your spot on, it's a diffuser that Fisher and pykel have and perfectly safe. I'm not sure why other brands don't use it unless it's an IP thing. Anyway it works well and it is also washable. Its been the most annoying thing for many people using the n20 mask so I'm not sure why resmed haven't offered something like this before

I think a little thing called a "patent" is what prevents other brands from stealing ideas from the competition.
ResMed has come up with their own patented vent diffusing system with the way they do the vent holes like on the P10 and it works pretty darn good.

I know Stuart (maker of my Bleep mask) had to be real careful with whatever venting system he decided to use on the Bleep. He knew he needed to do something but all the usual diffusers that worked well were already patented by someone else. So for right now we have had to do something similar to what you did with the ESON diffuser on your N20....take something else and make it work.
I stick a ResMed machine filter over the Bleep vent holes. Gauze can be used as well but the filter stays in place without my having to tape it in place. He would have loved to do a clip on diffuser like the one on the ESON but F & P probably wouldn't have liked him stealing their idea.

I have always said that these cpap manufacturers would sue their mother if they felt wronged in any way by her. They are extremely protective of their ideas.

I used twisty ties to attach one of my machines filters over the vent. Lol.
