Nasal pillows/cushions are not compatible with Philips Respironics DreamStation??

Post by crab-legs » Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:40 pm

I was in the hospital recently, and the RT there said nasal pillows/cushions were not compatible with my DreamStation (I only had a FFM). I was on a nasal-gastric feeding tube and asked for nasal cushions since the tube would have caused my Simplus FFM to leak. Anyway, that was two months ago, and my current head strapping is about to fall apart (it is almost 2 years old) and I want to switch to SwiftFx nasal pillows, since they worked super in my 6/2018 sleep study, whereas my FFM leaks and is too restrictive. Are the nasal pillows compatible with my DreamStation VAuto CPAP?

YES...The hospital RT was mistaken.....In most cases, any mask can be used with any machine.

Absolutely they are.

RT's frequently have no idea about anything related to home CPAP.

Thanks palerider! I am beginning to learn that about RT's, haha.

The really scary part is I don't think they have much of an idea how to do cpap in the hospital setting either.

I think they're probably best at doing things like respiratory diseases, or getting your lungs working again when you've got fluid overload, etc.. but for SDB? nah.

I think I phrased my original question wrong. I want to switch from a Fisher & Paykel Simplus FFM to Swift Fx nasal pillows for my DreamStation. I thought I could just buy the nasal pillows and headgear and just stick it to my hose, but apparently you need a special mini hose as well (see the pic below)? You also need a prescription for a mask, which I have, but I wasn't aware of this. Does the prescription have to specify Swift Fx or nasal pillows, or just a mask? And why don't they sell a complete package, with the nasal pillows, headgear, and mini-hose?

Thanks!

It's not called a mini-hose. It's called the mask assembly kit because it contains the part the nasal pillows attach to as well as the short hose.
And they do sell it in one complete package.

Prescriptions are required for complete mask packages at most online vendors.
Usually the wording "cpap mask of patient's choice" is sufficient.
Some online vendors don't enforce the prescription required thing.

Replacement parts bought individually don't require a RX so you can buy each separate part separately and get around the RX requirement.

You're right! Thank you. I couldn't find it because I was searching by the wrong terms.

This is a perfect example of why we're picky about the terms people use to describe things :D
