Airsense 10 APAP -- "Motor Life Exceeded, contact care provider" message, Also ? about Sleepyhead

Post by MarylandCPAPer » Sun Apr 12, 2020 2:30 am

My Airsense 10 APAP for Her machine has been in operation for about 5 years--WOW, the time has flown. I decided to update my Sleephead and Rescan software data today and noticed that my machine has a message: "Motor life exceeded, contact care provider." As far as I know, my A10 machine has been working fine. I haven't been to this board for a while, so I did not know that Sleepyhead has been discontinued and replaced by OSCAR. Several questions:

1) Has anyone gotten the message before about "motor life exceeded"? Does that mean my machine is about to croak? I will contact my DME on Monday, but am curious whether this message means my machine is malfunctioning or about to die before then. I don't look at the machine every day, just put on the mask and the APAP automatically starts, so I don't know how long the message has been there.

2) I think insurance/Medicare will pay for a new machine about every 5 years, so I suppose it is about time for a new one. Is the A10 for Her APAP currently still available new, and if I have been happy with it, what are the options for replacement? Any new models of APAP machine that are considered better?

3) I have downloaded my data from the data card to my computer into Sleepyhead and Rescan software periodically over the years. I am using the same computer as I was when I got this A10. I found the Rescan program and downloaded my data into it, but I cannot find the Sleepyhead program on my computer at all. I haven't downloaded OSCAR, and didn't even know it existed until today. Does the Sleepyhead program and data delete itself from a computer if not used? I would not have intentionally deleted it, and I have searched all of my program files, icons, and everywhere I can think of to find it. Any ideas on any names under which it may be hiding, or does it self-delete??

4) I have an icon on my computer for Sleep Master. It appears to have no program connected and I don't recall adding any software by that name. Any one ever heard of it?

5) Before I download OSCAR to a computer running Windows 8.1, is there anything I should know? Does it work better on Windows 8.1 or Windows 10? I have a new laptop I haven't set up yet that runs Windows 10. I keep seeing tech support notes on problems with recent Windows 10 patches and updates, so I have been delaying setting up the new laptop. My Windows 8.1 computer seems to be working fine (a little slow sometimes) and it has space for more programs.

6) My primary sleep problem for the last year or two (or more) is that I can only get to sleep in the wee morning hours and am ready to get up about 12 hours later. So I am essentially living on the opposite time frame as the rest of the US. I am retired, so I have adapted, but it becomes seriously problematic when I have to interact with other people, such as on holidays or on doctor appointments. No problem this holiday, as I am self-isolating at home and family is not gathering. Is there anything any CPAP/APAP machine can do to help radically change a person's sleep schedule when it is so out of whack? I think this was starting to be a problem before I got the A 10 about 5 years ago, but nowhere nearly a total reversal of sleep / wake hours from the rest of the world.

I have happily used the A10 for the last 5 years with no other problems other than an emergency hospitalization in late October, when I did not take my CPAP machine and the hospital only had machines by the other major CPAP machine manufacturer and only had full face masks (no nasal pillows masks). I found their mas/machine to be unusable and stayed awake the whole 5 days, more or less. I would recommend taking your machine (or at least your mask) with you to the hospital if you think you may get admitted. I thought I had a severe medicine allergy when I went to the ER, but it turned out I was in sepsis and had a 5 inch blood clot in my bladder. The bacteria / virus causing this was never identified. I was released on Halloween after 5 days in the hospital.

Thank you for any help you can give me with my questions.

Motor life exceeded has been reported by a few people. It's a sort of built in warning so that people can start the process to get a new machine. It doesn't mean that it's going to up and die tomorrow but it could (but then so could any machine) so for that reason I would suggest starting the ball rolling towards getting a new one.

Right now there is no other newer model than what you have from ResMed....ResMed hasn't released a newer model to the AirSense 10 models. I suggest just getting a new version of what you currently use. IMHO it's still the best choice in the cpap/apap models.

Sleep Master is a program used for wireless transfer of the data to the computer from a special SD card with wi fi capabilities.

I have no idea where your SleepyHead went to but it doesn't self destruct.

OSCAR is based on SleepyHead so will look the same. It actually downloads faster and will be kept updated as new models of machines are released.
I suggest you get it and just use it.
OSCAR https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/
http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph ... stallation
http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph ... rpretation
It works well on Windows 8.1 or 10 ...no need to do anything special.

Machines can't change a person's sleep schedule. That's habit and the change has to come from the person.

  1. I would definitely interpret that message as time to get a new device. Relegate your current device to a spare. You don't want your machine to fail, and then not have a machine while waiting for a new one.
  2. The AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her is still one of the most popular devices and the one most recommended around here.
  3. SleepyHead doesn't self delete
  4. Sleep Master is the name of an app that copies data from the Toshiba FlashAir WiFi SD Card for use with SleepyHead/OSCAR
  5. OSCAR should work fine on both Windows 8.1 and 10.
  6. No.

I got the "Motor life exceeded" alarm on my S9 AutoSet and used it for an additional several years. Here's a graphic based on the screen from the S9 that I created for a previous thread in 2018:

I concur with Pugsy and Dog Slobber. I kept mine for years too long over the "motor life exceeded" date. I regret that. Get a new one if you can. If nothing else, you can keep your old machine as a backup. It's worth it for your peace of mind.

I only waited a year before I bought a second unit, (A Remstar APAP, new from CPAP DOT COM), later I bought a used one also. You have to have one for Murphy and it doesn't hurt to get his friend one too, it keeps Murphy out of my stuff  Jim

I had some experience recently with this you may find enlightening. I was using an aging ResMed S9 and a newer AirCurve 10 alternating due to the shift I work. I thought the S9 was working fine and by all appearances it was. I recently replaced the S9 for a second lightly used A10 and in the process picked up a good gauge manometer to thoroughly test it and my other machines out. As it turns out, the S9 was not delivering the pressure it was supposed to be delivering. The setting was 18/8 but it was only giving me around 16.5/8 or so. At this point, the motor had about 7 years on it, with 5 years continuous and about 1 1/2 years split. This finally explained a disparity I was having in my sleep reports between the machines.

Thank you for the responses.

After I posted my original message, I changed the email address for my account as MarylandCPAPer. Since then, I have not been able to login, and it seems that my MarylandCPAPer User ID has been deactivated. I clicked on the link for Board Administrator regarding my MarylandCPAPer account login problems, but have not received any response. Any suggestions on how to recover my original account, so I have access to the PMs and user profile for that account?

You need to contact Carolyn Goodman about your account problem. She's the only one who can fix it. I don't have access to that level.
She is at home though due to the virus so doing some work from home but also taking care of a toddler. So not here all that much right now. The other administrators aren't here anymore...and if you did send her a PM...resend it and give her some time. She's been at home 5 weeks now.

hmmm, this is not great news. I have an S9 (no motor life exceeded message though). So I checked. Purchased 4/21/2010... I should probably get a script from the doc for a new machine. I just figured they run forever.

I have a family friend who has been on cpap for over 25 years...and his first machine still works. So in theory they can sometimes last almost forever since we don't really know what constitutes "forever".
In reality though...it's a machine and machines can wear out. Some sooner than others for any number of reasons.
Nothing really lasts forever unless it is something we don't like or want.

Keep your old machine as a backup. New machines occasionally fail or are beset with mishaps.
