Sleep Review PodCast on Home studies

Post by Pad A Cheek » Mon Mar 05, 2007 8:23 am

Hello In My research, I have found a podcast link.

Dr. Dement discusses home sleep studies and the benefits. Sleep Review is a very good magazine for current events in Sleep Medicine. Also HME Today is also a good reference.

Dement and Phillips are both sleep medicine giants IMHO. In this podcast series of interviews, these two sleep-medicine icons share differing opinions about ambulatory testing. My profound gratitude to these and other sleep-medicine pioneers, who regularly think outside the box toward constant improvement.

That was a GREAT link, Karen. Thank you so much!

Wow, in the first presentation they suggest that the precent of OSAs being treated is 15%! Meaning for every person getting treatment, there are 5 more untreated.

Wow.

just amazing Dr. William C. Dement, MD, PhD, the father of sleep medicine has absolutely NO idea of what an in-lab PSG costs

I listened to all of the podcasts, and NONE addressed what the patient may be MISSING by having such a in-home study.

such as monitoring your sleep architecture
observing if you have any Central Apnea, just put them on cpap
observing if you have any other disorder that impacts your sleep such as spontaneous arousals, RLS or PLMD.

Their collective goal seems only to get more people diagnosed;get them on some kind of cpap treatment; and GET REIMBURSED!!! Yet we have no idea what it costs for a lab PSG or titration but we have to get reimbursed for this in-home study.

But maybe it is a good thing we NOT know we have these other sleep disorders, because they have no idea what to do about them anyway.

They might as well just by-pass the in-home study and have you answer the multiple guess EDS questionnaire and send you home with a plain jane cpap set at 10cm like they used to do in the early days.
