Whining noise from AirSense 10 AutoSet, oh my!

Post by RogerSC » Tue Sep 08, 2020 1:07 pm

Last night my CPAP starting making a whining noise when I turned it on at the beginning of the night. It's relatively constant, but gets a little louder when I breath. Too loud for sleeping, so I've substituted my old S9 for it. At the time it started, I pushed everything in, the humidifier tank, the hose plug in the back of the machine, pressed on the machine to see if that affected it, the usual stuff one does with a mechanical device...just stayed the same. Sounds more mechanical to me than like a noise air would make, but I'm no expert with these things *smile*.

Anyways, an annoying pitch and too loud to live with.

I've done some searching around the site, but haven't found anything useful. Before I launch into a repair/replace project (just over a year old, got it last March), I wanted to see if anyone had dealt with something similar. Other than going the repair/replace route. There is a 2-year warranty on these things, so I should be able to get service if I need to take the warranty route.

About a month ago I had a somewhat similar problem with my Resmed ASV machine. I wouldn't quite call it a whining noise but a noise developed that was most noticeable on inhalation. At first I thought I had the hose pinched but in a few minutes realized that it was coming from the machine. I could not fall asleep with the noise and neither could my wife. I called my DME provider and played the sound via telephone to them and they diagnosed it as a bad bearing(s) and replaced the machine for me under warranty. Machine was about 15 months old and had about 3500 hours on it. I do believe their diagnosis was correct but am disappointed that the problem occurred so early in machine's life. My replacement machine is working perfectly and hope that it continues to do so for a longer time than my original machine.

If it's under warranty get it replaced. It's the blower going bad.

Interesting, comparable length of time and hours on my AutoSet...hopefully the next one will last longer, since my warranty will be over next time around *smile*.

Anyways, gave it up and dropped it off for warranty replacement yesterday. The S9 is louder (before the AirSense started whining), but it still works fine after 8 years. Don't make 'em like they used to, I guess *smile*.

That’s crazy - I’ve had a couple of these with the same issue within a year or two of getting them new from the DME, so I’ve heard of this far too many times now.

i'm beginning to suspect i bought mine at the right time. so far so good. but there do seem to be a few reports here on the forum of bad ones.

My AirSense 10 Autoset started making the same loud wining sound last Sunday, Sept. 6th, 2020. It was so loud that I couldn't use it. It was 22 months old and still under warranty. I looked up the problem online and discovered it was probably a blower that was going bad.

Since Monday was Labor Day here in the USA, I had to wait until Tuesday the 8th to call the company that sold the device to me. The technician asked if I had cleaned it with SoClean. I said "no" and reported that I did manual cleanings. She said that was good because if I used SoClean, that would void the warranty. She said the company would swap out the machine. I drove there and had it swapped out with a new one the same day. The new one works well. The machine looks the same as the old one. The new one has a smaller and lighter power brick.

The CPAP machine that broke was my second AirSense 10 Autoset. The first one I had for two weeks. I had it swapped out because the internal modem wouldn't work and I couldn't see any data in the cloud. I only have 7 weeks left on the 2 year warranty that now covers my new CPAP machine. I like the machine, but I am concerned about the quality control at Resmed. A friend of mine has a Philips Respironics CPAP machine that he used for over 10 years before he replaced it with a new one. It still works and is now his backup machine.

here at the forum, we've been trying to educate folk about the unnecessary product called soclean. sometimes, i think newbies (obviously NOT you) don't think we are right in our fight against it.

so good to have your unsolicited testimony.
