Dream Wisp and sores on nose bridge

Post by bwexler » Sat Sep 26, 2020 12:33 pm

I really like my Dream Wisp Mask, except for the sores it creates on the bridge of my nose.
Is there another cushion, or another nasal mask or ???? with a top of head hose connection that will be more gentle on the bridge of my nose.
My daily driver has been the Sleepweaver 3D which works well for me most of the time. Occasionally it decides it is leak night and I need to switch it out for something else.
2 nights with my DreamWisp and I have a sore on the bridge of my nose.

Still searching hopelessly for my perfect mask.

Question about your skin tone.....is your skin tone what I would call paper skin. Easily torn? Least little boo boo causes a sore or abrasion or bleeding?

BWexler,
For what it's worth I had the same problem with it and it has prevented me from using it. I do use the Dreamware mask with no such problem. I don't think we are alone.

There are stick-on pads for nose masks, perhaps through Amazon or someone like CPAPSupplyUSA. Might be able to adapt.

Creams/gels may help lubricate so if damage is from sliding reduce it.

I think older people tend to have thinner skin. But of course complexions vary.

Beware that some people are allergic to 'tin cure' silicone, interfaces should be 'platinum cure' silicone, but I don't trust the competence of CPAP interface designers.

When I first started treatment, my first mask caused a sore on the bridge of my nose. I used a small band aid on it until it healed, then I used a piece of moleskin on my nose every night. You can find the moleskin at drug stores in the foot care area. If you decide that is the way you are going to go, you can purchase it in rolls on the internet. The roll is two inches wide and fifteen feet long. A roll of it will last a long time. I would cut a piece about an inch long and use it on my nose. The respiratory therapist I worked with when I first started told me her husband used the same method to prevent his mask from making his nose sore.

Ah, good to know that 'moleskin' works.

There are creams used on baby bottoms, some people suggest those for CPAP interfaces.

'band-aid' come in different levels of aggressiveness of adhesive.

Here's another alternative way to deal with sores that works well and does not cause a leak in the cushion seal.

After two nights with DreamWisp I have an angry red line across my nose, about 2/3 of the way up. And by "line" I mean 1/2" wide and 1" long.

Lanky Lefty in his review of this on youtube mentioned it made him break out across the bridge of his nose, something no other mask ever did. He said he fixed it by switching from the medium to the large size nose piece. But in the end the leaks into his eyes were too much.

I was sleeping well with this mask with minimal leaking (medium nose piece) but obviously it is headed in a bad direction with this red sore nose line.

When I started CPAP, and my nostrils became red and painful the RT told me I had to let the area heal, and therefore, I should take a 3 day break from using the CPAP.
I did so, and the problem never returned - that was 20 year ago.

Your skin knows how to become tougher when irritated - if you let it heal between bouts of irritation. That's what you do when you train your muscles to weight lift, or your heart to give you better oxygenation when you have to run longer, or faster.

Or when you take a break from wearing irritating shoes, so the irritated skin on your feet doesn't become bleeding sores.

Ask your RT how a bad a break to let you skin heal can be - don't let the sore are become a real sore.

*This was after the nasal mask just wouldn't work and I tried a pillows mask. Have been using pillows in some variantion, or hybrids ever since.

Switched to another type of mask for 3 nights, cleaned the DreamWisp, cleaned my nose right before bed, loosened the mask as much as possible, used DreamWisp again for 2 nights...angry red line again on the bridge of my nose.

No, there is definitely something wrong with this mask, as many others have discovered.

Yeah I've had a reaction before to adhesive, I would trust this tape more than whatever is on moleskin. I am not sure what the purpose of moleskin is, it is really thick with a hole in the middle to shelter a blister from friction. A really thick covering on one part of the nose would make it more likely to break the seal I would think. The blue sensitive tape is thin. If it's a friction problem that should help. If it's a pressure problem I'm not sure anything would help. If it's a clogged pore problem then again I don't see how covering it with tape of any kind would help.

I can either let this heal for three days again and try again with sensitive skin tape, or return the mask. Hmmm. Is it friction, pressure, or clogged pores that causes this?
