CPAP suggestions UK

Post by Erlolhiasn » Tue Dec 08, 2020 8:44 am

Hi all - I've been a member for some time and the team in here has helped me a lot in the past, but couldn't reset my password to login, so have had to set up a new account.
I've recently moved to the UK and brought my Dreamstation with me.
Unfortunately, some of the internal screws appear to have come loose and are now sitting in with the fan - I have tried hard to get them out, but can't without opening the whole thing up (which I am not about to do!).
It seems to work fine - but I'm thinking I need a back-up plan in case it fails.

Jump to my question - where is the best place to buy a machine in the UK (I have noooo idea!). My preference would be the Dreamstation Go, or just stick with my Dreamstation APAP.
Thanks all!!

Hi Eriolhiasn,

The best place to buy CPAP machines in the UK is direct from the manufacturers' UK head-offices. Since the manufacturers make enough money via bulk sales to the NHS, they have time to sell to individual people.

You will need a 'scrip' – prescription – and if you didn't bring one with you, a family doctor or 'general practitioner' here can sign it. Call the manufacturer, say you need a blank scrip form, and let them send it to you via e-mail.

Philips Respironics UK are in Chichester, and on 0800 130 0844. And also on the internet.

ResMed UK are in Abingdon, on 0800 907 7071. And also on the internet.

BTW, Philips Respironics UK also do repairs. Takes about a week, what with the carrier from you to them, the work getting done, and the carrier back to you.

If you can do without for that long, you might not need to buy a new machine.

Alternatively, you can buy a new one. And then have the one you've got fixed, and have it as 'back-up'.

RB.

Thanks RB - that's awesome.
The script maybe an issue as I've never been diagnosed (sleep studies were both fine but I have no idea why and I am not about to do a third one!), but I'll see what happens.
Thanks again!!

I believe Second Wind CPAP will ship to the UK.

Hi Okie bipap,

I've recommended Second Wind in the past, but I took the OP to be asking about getting a new machine.

Also, I don't know if you've been following the news, but getting stuff through UK Customs at present – and especially after January 1 – is going to be a bit of a mess, with delays more than likely. :)

Hi both - just a quick follow up post.
I took the advice and went to SecondWind CPAP - machine has just arrived (can't remember exactly when I ordered it, but not much more than a week if even as long as that including customs clearing time).
I bought a gently used dreamstation auto - it looks brand new on a first look. I'm not sure if its the same model as my existing one, or if its set pressure (guessing auto implies it is the adjusting one -I'll work it out when I set it later) and cost significantly less than it would have cost buying here, including the custom fees.
Thank you folks - it's horrible having to pay for these things, so this was a great idea! I really want the Go version - but we'll get there!
Now to get my current one fixed and then I'll have a contingency plan!
Really appreciate this forum by the way - I have been using it for years to jump into and out of. I really should keep more of an eye on it and try to help newbies in return.

Hi Erlolhiasn,

Glad it worked out for you. I'm sure that having all the right paperwork from SecondWind speeded the transition. I imagine that, in the current circs, the customs officer who handled your shipment breathed a sigh of relief at dealing with a nice, uncomplicated import.
